Built in Microphone all of a sudden not working

When I go into Settings & click ' Allow all apps to access my microphone' the system won't recognize my device. When I 'Don't all all apps to access my microphone; the system recognizes my device. Either way nobody can hear me (they can see me so camera is ok) & I can see/hear everyone calling me. Everything was working fine until yesterday Mar 29. Have unistalled recent Microsoft update, still no change. Troubleshooter says my device is working properly.

    Hello there, this is Emily.

Can you hold down Windows + R keys, type in mmsys.cpl and hit enter. When launched, go to the Recording tab, do you see the built in mic listed? If so, make sure it is enabled, it is set as default device. If that's the case, double click on it, then go to the Levels tab, make sure the level is turned all the way up, and the mute button doesn't have the red line over it. If so, unmute it.

Once the above is all checked out ok, but it still doesn't work. Can you check to see if this is just affecting certain app, or it doesn't matter? You can launch the Sound Recorder app, and recording yourself speaking, and see if you can see the the visual sound wave going up and down, and see if you can play it back as well.

If it still doesn't work, try manually download the audio driver from the manufacturer website, and then manually install it. If you need help finding it, I need the exact model of your computer. You can type msinfo32.exe in the search on the taskbar and hit enter, it should launch the System Information window. Tell me what's listed next to System Model. Thanks!

Thanks Emily. I changed my Recording input from Realtek Stereo Mix to Microphone Array (Intel). Did a new driver download, enabled what I thought I had to & things seem to be working good now. Will keep my fingers crossed. Thanks for your time & help, much appreciated. Kath

Realtek stereo mix is not the built in mic. So it looks like the system is not seeing the mic. I just want to mention that this can be also a possible hardware issue with the mic itself.

But regardless, let's make sure we do our dilligence on the software side first. You wan the audio driver. Once installed, restart the computer before you test it. If it still doesn't work, you want to also download chipset and bios and install them. If you have Windows pro version, you might want to go to Control Panel to disable bitlocker before you install BIOS.

Thanks for your quick reply. Nothing improved so went to manufacturer & have been given an option to pick 1) Audio Driver or 2) Audio Console Driver. Am not sure which download to pick, my only built in device option is Realtek Stereo Mix. Do you know which I should download? Thnks again.
