Issue transferring files from mobile phone to PC

Hi,

I have always had issues transferring files from my mobile (android) to PC, because the windows Photo app (which I didn't want to use) repeatedly got in the way causing problems.

Today I found a question/answer to remove Photos from my PC which I did via Windows Power Shell.

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/how-to-disableuninstall-the-photo-app-in-windows/9328ef95-2993-4be8-882a-442b96950f2b

It seems to have removed it and the icon on the taskbar has gone.

However when I try to transfer files from my mobile to PC now using windows explorer, I get the same audio sound still that the Photos app used to make when trying to access my mobile data. For a moment I see the mobile data files, but then the window closes. Something is blocking the transfer and disconnecting it and I can't transfer any files. I get an error msg "the device has stopped responding or been disconnected". When I try to go back in to the mobile phone folder on windows explorer it then says "this folder is empty".

Any ideas?

Please help, my mobile phone is full of data that I need to transfer and back up.

Thank you.

    Hello

Uploading to Google Drive is bypassing the problem that Microsoft should fix. The Microsoft photo app is rubbish because of you want the use the function of downloading from your phone only the new photo from the last download this will not work reliably and you will end up with duplicates. This is probably the most important feature of a photo import application which it fails completely.

Berceuse I had this problem persistently and could get no Microsoft solution, since 2016 I have been using File Explorer to select the files manually ,which was very slow and laborious but it worked. Now I find that on several systems in our home that run Windows 10, file explorer will hang before you have the chance to select anything as i presume it takes too long for it to read the remote Android folder.

Microsoft rubbishware strikes again and I will now just replace Windows 10 with Ubuntu as it will do everythings I need and so much faster and more reliable.

It beggars believe that in 2023 windows cannot efficiently connect to any phone via a USB cable and transfer files but that there we are at.

Thanks for your reply. The main reason I upload and download via Google Drive is because it has fewer things that can go wrong. With the method that you and many people are using, and I previously used, when something goes wrong, you will wonder: Is it Android? Is it a setting in Android? Is it a driver? Is it the transfer software? Is it Windows? Is it an app? Too many possible points of failure for me to troubleshoot.

So I can best take an educated guess in your situation that your computer is configured by 'autoplay' to open the default photo editor (which could be Photos) when a connected USB device (which in this case is your phone) contains photos. You can find the autoplay settings here:

    Start menu >Devices > Autoplay

In my case, I chose "Take no action" which won't come as a surprise to you. šŸ˜‰

I have always transferred files from my Android phone to Windows by uploading the files to my Google Drive and then downloading them to my PC. What I like about this method is that it doesn't ask for cables or drivers or software or settings. And it works for me every time.

You have concluded that the Photos app "got in the way" but you haven't explain how you arrived at this conclusion or even what it means to get in the way. The Photos app has never interfered with my photos, nor would it, because it stays on my computer inert until I call on it to edit my photos.

I take you at your word that something is going on with your photos. If you would explain what that is, we would love to help you.

    Hi RottweilerX,

Thanks for reading my question and replying.

When I connected my mobile by USB cable to the PC and selected file transfer on the mobile phone, I would try to access the data via Windows File Explorer but the Photos app would auto prompt and open and would try to connect to my mobile phone (blocking File Explorer in the process), but then it would give me a message saying it couldn't successfully connect. After many attempts at closing Photos and retrying with File Explorer (including unattaching and reattaching the usb cable) the connection would eventually work but it was very frustrating and wasted a lot of time. Sometimes I gave up because I just couldn't stop the Photos app from interfering.

I haven't used Google Drive before but I might need to give it a go if I can't get this to work via usb.

I would really like to be able to retrieve the data using the usb cable and File Explorer.
