How to make Windows Update finish without asking questions

After I haven't used Windows for half a year, it has a number of updates. But then it starts asking questions "Restart your system? OK or Cancel", and just sits there, bothering me and forcing to sit around for it to finish quickly. How can I make it just do it all without asking ANY questions, like good old Windows could do?

    Hi,

unfortunately there is not a real way to cancel the updates once they started...

There are some things I could suggest that could help here...

    A) If you are installing a lot of feature updates (named something like 1904 or 21H2) these can be skipped by doing an upgrade via the media creation tool. Then you just need to do that, and then install the commultative updates.

    B) You could use remote access (such as remote desktop) to access the device from your phone or another PC.

    C) Check these registry keys in case this is an option for you (don't think it's worth the effort though, and you only get another 15min from what I got by quickly reading over it.)

Other than that, you can schedule a restart command from the command line, but you would need to know exactly how long the update is going to take (which is most likely not the case)

However, at max it should be about 3-4 restarts, so at this point, it's probably about to be done...

    Sincerely,

    LightJack

And these "timeouting" prompts are the problem. I want to bypass them. Because I start the updates and roll my wheelchair away to do something else - and then I not only have to constantly watch for that stupid prompt, but also roll back to click it, so it doesn't slow me down.

Ideally, I should have a "do it all" option that shows a blue screen that says "installing updates" and a cancel button under, and it should proceed at full speed and change to login screen when it's completely done.

I just want Windows to be completely updated before I install a new TurboTax on it, and I don't wish to wait for it to update at night, or risk installing TurboTax while Windows is updating (we know that nobody ever tests that)

    Hi,

under Update & Security > Windows Update > Advaced Options

select "Install updates as soon as possible."

This will give you a 30 min prompt after the update installation is complete, and then reboot.

    Sincerely,

    LIghtJack

Thank for all suggestions, I guess it might do it automatically at night, but I need it when I need it.

But you haven't answered the base question - how can I tell it to "install everything RIGHT NOW and don't ask any more questions". As it is, it installs half of update and then says "reboot, OK or cancel" and then WASTES 10 MIN before it timeouts, reboots and continues. Can't Microsoft make "install and reboot as necessary without asking" button? I'm a software developer myself and know how easy and basic it is to do.

    Hi Rammstein,

I'm Sumit, here to answer your query at the Microsoft Community.

If you have not installed updates for a few months, usually, 2 reboots will install all.

Basic question: Is Active hours enabled? You will not be bothered if active hours are enabled.

Open the Settings app by pressing Windows key + I.

    Click on Update & Security.

Click on Change active hours under the Update settings section.

Turn on the toggle switch for Automatically adjust active hours for this device based on activity.

Windows 10 will now automatically adjust your active hours based on your device activity. This will help prevent your device from restarting during important work hours.

    Hope this helps.
