Hi,

I've updated my PC to the latest windows update "KB5025239", what I now seeing in the event logs after this update the Windows service that controls starting the Task Scheduler crashes on first try after a reboot but then the service starts on the second attempt.

Hopefully someone will have an idea why this happens with the latest update as prior to upgrading there was never a problem with the Task Scheduler starting.

Windows events:

Event Error 7031:

    Hi again, Martyn.

    My compliments on your thoroughness.

Since this pretty much confirms the issue is with the Windows Update, what I would do is the second paragraph in my first step above. Install the Hide Updates tool, restart and uninstall the problem Update, then immediately run the tool to catch and hide the Update.

You can try it again later but I'd wait until later this year when the next Version Update is released and it will be rolled in and rarely causes the same problem.

Feel free to ask back any questions. Based on the results you post back, I will have other suggestions if necessary.

    Hi,

The following are my updates to your response, and thanks for looking.

    1) https://www.makeuseof.com/task-scheduler-not-working-windows ****

I've restarted my PC multiple times and still it throws an error on first starts of service to load task schedular.

I've ran SFC and DISM commands and no corruption was found.

The service for Task Schedular is one of those Windows services that cannot be restarted by a user even if they have admin privileges.

I performed a clean boot (not all services, applications apart form Microsoft ones) but this doesn't stop the schedular from throwing an error.

    2) https://www.maketecheasier.com/windows-task-scheduler-not-working/ ****

I've restored back using my daily backups using Aconis and can confirm it happens every time I deploy the latest Windows update KB5025239.

The task schedular is enable to start this was verified by a number 2 in the registry Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Schedule\Start 2

I've ran Autoruns and removed tasks in the task schedular that show "File not found", after a reboot I still get the same error.

    3) https://www.isunshare.com/windows-10/fix-task-scheduler-not-running-in-windows-10-11.html ****

This just seems to repeat all the actions above.

    4) https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/windows-11-performance-and-install-integrity/4f020fd1-f08c-45a3-8a30-c112f1a0b29f - very good article :)

The drivers are all up to date, a full disk check was performed on windows boot and no abnormal sectors found.

I don't believe its an account corruption so not created a new account.

I have performed AV scans before and after and none displayed any virus or root kits, I also ran a scan outside windows using a bootable Linux distro.

I've performed the Windows repair where I kept my files and applications, it preceeded to update WIndows 11, and instal the patches. The last patch to be installed was KB5025239 where it again causes the Task manager to crash on first start.

    Thanks, Martyn

Hello, I'm Greg, here to help you with this.

    1. See if you can System Restore to a point before the Update(s) installed. System Restore is a time machine that takes you back to a point where Windows was working correctly: https://beebom.com/how-system-restore-windows-11/

If the problem repeats then System Restore again or uninstall any Updates that were just installed in Settings > Windows Update > Update History, restart Windows and immediately block those Updates as shown here:

    https://www.droidwin.com/how-to-stop-only-a-spe...

    1. If that doesn't work here are fixes that often work for Task Scheduler in Windows 11:

    https://www.makeuseof.com/task-scheduler-not-wo...

    https://www.maketecheasier.com/windows-task-sch...

    https://www.isunshare.com/windows-10/fix-task-s...

    https://www.isunshare.com/windows-10/fix-task-s...

    1. Go over Windows 11 with this Performance Checklist to make sure the install is set up correctly, optimized for best performance, and to find and fix problems:

Feel free to ask back any questions. Based on the results you post back, I will have other suggestions if necessary.
