I have checked Environment Variables. Both "TEMP" and "TMP" are set to C:\WINDOWS\TEMP.

Any advice? Thanks in advance.

Actually I have the same issue.

It started some weeks ago (april 2023)

When ever I open a file in Word, or Excel nothing happens, but as soon as I change anything and press save to keep it, while continuing work.

Then a file is created in the same folder as my files (No matter which folder I am in)

While editing ie. a text - then it create a visible file, like ~$toPlan.docx (Size = 162)
When I close Word or Excel, this temp file disappear, but instead a file like ~WRD0000.TMP is created (Size = 0)

I fully understand the thing about making TMP while we edit Word, Excel or such.
But I have never before seen the TMP files in my operative work folders.
And also never before seen these programs spawning ~xxxxx.TMP zero byte files in my folders.
These TMP are 'not' in hidden mode.
They just started appearing a few weeks ago, and I haven't been able to find out how to stop the annoying files.
Ok - I just delete them. But remembering to do that after each work on a text is cumbersome.

I suspect that it has arrived with some new update of my programs
It is: Microsoft® Word til Microsoft 365 MSO (Version 2208 Build 16.0.15601.20590) 64-bit

Any help to stop the spreading of these TMP files will be appreciated

    Hi Noel,

I am Dave, I will help you with this.

If you open the Environment variables, in the top section (User Variables) TEMP and TMP should be set to this:

    %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Temp

And in the bottom section (System Variables) that would be set to this:

    C:\Windows\Temp

Typically Windows and your installed software would constantly product temporary files, and you can manually delete the contents of the Temp folders from time to tie, when you select everything in the temp folder, there will be a few files that cannot be deleted because they are in use.

Where else are you seeing that temporary files are being created and not deleted?

    Hi Noel,

Those are Adobe Illustrator files and when you are working on those files, a temp file would be crated, but Illustrator is meant to delete those after you save and close the file.

Thanks Dave. The files aren't deleted after I close down the software. Is this an adobe issue?

Thanks Dave. Those are how the settings are currently configure

Seeing Temp files in whichever folder the work file is located in...

And curiously only 1 temp file in the tmp folder (dating from May 2022)

Have never seen this issue prior to windows 11.
