Cannot Disable Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling in Windows 11

I have Windows 11 Pro and I have tried disabling Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling (HAGS) from both the Default Graphics Settings menu and in the registry under Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers HwSchMode. Either way, when I restart my computer and go back into the settings it is enabled again.

Is anyone aware of why this would happen? Are the NVIDIA drivers forcing HAGS on?

I have an Nvidia RTX 3060 TI and an AMD Ryzen 5 7600x. My motherboard is an MSI MAG B650 TOMAHAWK. All of the drivers and firmware are updated.

I would like to disable HAGS to improve VR performance.

Hello! My name is Mostafa, and I will try my best to assist you with this so that you find a satisfactory solution.

I’m sorry that you are experiencing this issue. There could be a few potential reasons for this behaviour.

It's possible that the NVIDIA drivers you have installed are overriding your HAGS settings. Ensure you installed the latest version.

Registry permission issues. Right-click on the "HwSchMode" entry and select "Permissions." Make sure your user account has "Full Control" permissions. If not, click on your user account and enable the "Full Control" checkbox.

May 3rd party software on your computer is overriding your HAGS settings. Such as MSI afterburnner.

If the above steps do not help, reach out to me, and I will be happy to help and try my best to resolve your issue. Thank you.

    Best,

    Mostafa

I disabled many startup programs one by one (including MSI Center) and I found that the program for my vr system (DPVR E4) called DPVR Assistant 4 is overriding the registry change to turn HAGS back on. This is actually a weird behavior I would not expect most graphics software to do.

Odd that this software forces HAGS on given the reporting in the community that HAGS is detrimental to vr performance. At least I know what is causing it now. Thank you
