hello

whenever I open files explorer it closes almost instantly and doesn't display any folders, it also lags my taskbar which started a few days ago, the computer is a lenovo ideapad 5 (LAPTOP-THG966B2) its quite new under a year old.

I'm able to access all my other folders apart from the home folder by right-clicking the explorer and selecting specific downloads or other folders but if I press the home folder while in the explorer it crashes. I've attempted a clean boot and registry editing to do with deleting the components of the shell or something (not experienced with command prompt) I've also tried to do the sfc scan commands and what not and health check in administrator mode on cmd prompt I have reset the computer with the files keeping option and downloaded from web windows version. I have used multiple virus and malware checkers including the built-in microsoft defender I tried something called resetoro but that was useless. I have tried ending the task in task manager and restarting it. I have tried to restore the default option in file explorer options and clear cache. also there is no message that is displayed when it crashes it simply crashes. altough i have access to all my files its still very annoying and i would like to be able to open up files explorer directly. please help

My name is Siva. I'm an Independent Advisor and I'll be glad to help you today.

Please try this below two methods to fix the issue.

    Clear File Explorer history

To clear the File Explorer history, proceed as follows.

    1. Open your Windows 10 Control Panel.
    2. In the Search box at the top right hand corner of the Control Panel type, File explorer options.
    3. In the list of search results, click File Explorer Options, as illustrated below.
    4. Click the Clear button, to clear the File Explorer history.
    5. Click OK.

Launch folder windows in a separate process

    1. Open your File Explorer window.
    2. Click on the View tab, and then double-click the Options icon.
    3. The Folder Options window opens, on the General tab.
    4. Click the View tab, to open the view options.
    5. Tick the checkbox, Launch folder windows in a separate process.
    6. At the bottom of the window, click the Apply button.

Feel free to ask back any questions. Based on the results you post back, I will have other suggestions if necessary.

I found the answer that fixed the problem. For me anyway.

Click on search at the bottom of your screen.

    Type in "file explorer options".

In file explorer options click on "view" at the top.

Check the box for "Always show icons, never thumbnails"

    Click "Apply" and "OK".

See if file explorer works now.

    Hope this helps you out.

    John

I was able to do all that you said to do, but I still can't open file explorer without it crashing a few seconds later. It will not allow me to open any of the documents I have there. What it did seem to do was, now the tray does not close, but remains at the bottom of the screen. Before the tray would disappear and come back after the crash.
