Good question! Your computer must be powered on to install updates. If it's not powered on when your computer has been selected to receive an update, the update will be installed when the computer is powered on again.

(1) The computer must be awake to update. But there is this setting in "Maintenance (type into Search), Change maintenance settings" which will wake the computer...

I don't think I've ever tried it. Put a check in that box to try. But Sleep doesn't last forever. Once entered, it normally will last for 3 hours, then automatically will Hibernate. I'm unsure but think it won't wake from a hibernation.

(2) "if I leave it in sleep mode -- does that count in the time I buy for the month!"

If it wakes & does a download, I'm pretty sure it will count.

Yes, your computer must be on for updates to download and install.

Anyway, Windows controls this process automatically, whenever you turn it on and you're connected to the internet, it should install updates if they're queued of course.

Nobody here knows about your monthly limit. That's a question for your internet service provider.
