Windows boots correctly, but with repulsive blinking cursor after dell logo

Hi, I have a little issue with my windows pc.

When I boot my pc, after the dell logo, I get a black screen with a blinking cursor that only lasts for a few seconds, then the windows logo appears and the boots complete. The expected behavior is mostly the same but without the repulsive and seemingly temporary blank screen and blinking cursor.

I first noticed this issue when I switched from bios to uefi (I did this with the mbr2gpt tool and toggling uefi in the bios menu). I had intended to dual boot ubuntu, and the switch was supposed to be a prerequisite. I noticed decreased performance, longer boot time, constant jetting of the cooling fan and this supposed issue. I tried to switch back to bios with the easeus partitioning tool, i.e. I converted the now gpt drive back to mbr and toggled the legacy mode on the bios menu. These resolved most of the issues, except for the temporary black and blinking cursor screen. I created a usb recovery from another pc and made a clean install of windows, but for some reason, the problem still persists.

I have searched through and almost all solutions refer to a permanent blank screen, which is not the case for me.

The thing that bothers me the most is the added boot time (up to 5 secs). I don't see myself turning my pc often if this persists, unlike before where it's mostly negligible to turn it off.

I could make a screen recording of this if it's hard to picture with words. Thanks for your time.

I just did this, this issue still persists somehow. I don't really think it's a bios issue, since it was working just fine with the AO3 version.

Try to install the Bios version A10 from 03 Oct 2011 first, then try to update to version A17 again.

I was able to find the AO9 version. I installed it first before the A17 (June 2017) version. However the problem still persists, do I have to reset the system again to notice any changes?

I get these errors when I try to flash the bios.

    • You must upgrade your system to AO9 before flashing this bios
    • This package is not appropiate for your system

    Hi, Abubakar,

Sorry to hear you're experiencing this issue.

Unfortunately, Dell does not support Windows 10 or above on your device and doesn't have a driver update since Windows 7. An incompatibility between an outdated driver and the last version of Windows could be the cause of the problem.

The only thing that you can try to fix this problem is to install the latest version of the Bios released on 02 Jun 2017 and check if the problem is fixed. You can download the latest Bios version at this link.
