It is not the disk, I have the same issue on Windows 11, this disk works perfectly with earlier Windows versions.
Windows 11 Will Not Recognize External HD - ADATA HD710
Hard drive is not recognized when I plug in. It will pop up and ask to initialize when I bring up disk mgt.
Both options result in a Data Error: Cyclic Redundancy Check, When I take a look at the device properties in Device Management: "This device is working properly." However there is an event in the log: "Device settings for USBSTOR\Disk&Ven_ADATA&Prod_HD710&Rev_2AR1\02B08081500200000073&0 were not migrated from previous OS installation due to partial or ambiguous device match."
I tried uninstalling device (and unplugging) and restarting multiple times. No change in this behavior.
I've also tried Disabling and Re-enabling the device.
Here's a list of things I cannot do:
- chkdsk (There is no drive letter assigned)
- Install drivers. ADATA does not provide drivers that I can find on trustworthy sites.
- Disk check because drive is not assigned a letter or viewable from This PC.
- I would prefer to not format the drive as there is still data there.
Here's a list of things I have done:
- Windows Updates. (All up-to-date including any optional updates)
- Uninstall device and unplug + restart.
- Uninstall all USB controllers and set them to not allow computer to turn off device to save power.
- Checked power settings but there is no USB settings within the power settings on my version of Windows 11
- Changed cables to ensure cable was not faulty.
- SFC Scan - Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.
I'm open to trying additional steps but this is really frustrating. It seems like it might be a corrupted driver but I'm not sure how to fix outside of uninstall and try again...

2023-04-17T04:38:31+00:00 Do you have it plugged into a USB2 port? A USB2 port can't supply the power required?
The drive needs a USB3 port or a Y cable to 2 USB2 ports
I don't have any USB2s on this laptop. Got a "gaming" laptop that only has 2 USB3s. That's a good thing to check though.
I did plug it into another laptop and it was not assigned a letter there either. Behavior appeared to be the same. That laptop was Windows 10. I thought that I was making some headway earlier when I tried bootrec /fixmbr to fix the master boot record. Then I was able to get to some different prompts in disk manager but it still would not initialize. Cannot create a partition on it after clean either in diskpart so I think it's something hardware that just gave out.
I think I'm going to need to cut my losses here. I bought it 11 years ago so I got more than my money's worth.

2023-04-16T05:13:36+00:00 Hello,
Thanks for reaching out! I'm an Independent Advisor and a Microsoft user like you.
As you have already performed most of the steps , and you received CRC error which means there can be issue with the Disk itself internally or may be issue with this Disk casing or Motherboard of the Disk.
Additionally you can try to attach this Disk to any other different Computer , also boot your Computer into safe mode and see if its working there.
In case of additional questions, reach out back to me, and I will be happy to help and try our best to resolve your issue.
Best Regards,
Prakash
