Camera showing grey/black screen

Regardless of the app I am using the built-in PC Camera for, the problem is the same. A grey screen. Some apps show that the camera is already being used by another app. This happens even if I have camera access given to just one app.

I have tried all the fixes recommended for similar issues so far. This includes restarting, all the checking updates and uninstalling and reinstalling drivers and all of that. I have also tried uninstalling and reinstalling the default Windows Camera app. Still nothing has changed.

Curiously, this problem arises out of nowhere. On some odd occasion, with no adjustments whatsoever, the camera starts working perfectly. And then, all of a sudden, it goes back to grey. Websites like Google Meet show that the camera failed. Curiously, this does happen only when an internet-based app or website tries to access the camera, and that too, only after some 30 seconds or so. The camera light remains on even after closing everything. It goes away only when I go to Device Manager and click on "Scan for Hardware Changes" or make any other changes there.

Maybe another noteworthy point is that before the camera fails completely, the image it shows real-time gets a sudden green tint.

I need a fix for this, asap. There are several important things I need the camera for.

Thank you.

P.S. I tried to add a screenshot but the file is failing to be uploaded. In Windows Camera, it just shows black, in the camera preview in Settings, it's a light grey, in the Whatsapp app again, it's a light grey but it shows the text that the camera is being used by another app. The camera light remains on even after disabling camera access.

I have actually tried all of the above, and nothing really worked. It seems to happen totally out of the blue, but no real solution exists.

    This worked for me:

I had a lenovo laptop, showing grey screen, when starting the cam. I went to device manager, and chose "show hidden devices"

There was 2 hidden cameras, and 2 not-hidden. I removed them all, including drivers. Reboot, and it worked again.

    Thank you.

    Right-click Start>Run.

Type in msinfo32 and press enter.

Take a screenshot of the System Summary window and post it in the next reply.

Hi, thank you for the reply. This did not fix the issue. However, I did notice some other things that I hope will be useful in tackling this issue.

Firstly, when I opened Device Manager this time, I saw the camera mentioned as "HP Truevision Camera" (I have a HP Pavilion), as opposed to "PC Camera", a few times before that. Secondly, the camera light no longer turns on.

    Hi Nibodh,

I'm Sumit, here to answer your query at the Microsoft Community.

The symptoms much point toward a defective Camera.

Press Windows+R keys on the keyboard, or Right-click Start on the Taskbar and choose Run.

    Type devmgmt.msc

    Press Enter.

    Expand Cameras.

Right-click the Camera and choose Uninstall.

Reboot your PC so that Camera reinstalls.

Check if the issue is resolved.
