Windows Defender Security Notification Icon missing?

I noticed that my Windows Defender Security Icon is missing from the system tray on the taskbar for the past few months. Havent installed any other antivirus.

What Ive checked:

  • Task manager startup: Windows Defender Security Notification Icon enabled
  • Taskbar "choose what icons appear": Windows defender security notification icon: enabled
  • Windows Defender and firewall notifications: all on
  • Windows Defender and firewall: turned on

Things Ive done:

  • I have used CMD as administrator and PowerShell to complete SFC/scan and the other repair commands and scans and all of them turned out with 0 issues.
  • Reset Windows Defender

Weird thing I noticed is after Windows updates the icon appears, however when I restart or shutdown and turn on my PC the icon is gone again. Another weird thing that happened is that a few days ago my power shut off and when I turned my PC back on the icon was there, however the next day after turning my PC on it was gone. I am really confused about why the Icon could be gone just like that?

Hello, just finished trying all the steps you provided me and still dont have the icon, and I also noticed that the "Windows security notification icon" isnt even running in task manager. Another thing I noticed is that when I restarted my PC for a split second I saw the Icon on the taskbar with the yellow "!", however when I went to the "Windows security notification Icon.exe" i ran it and the icon was on the taskbar with a green checkmark. Weird.

Another question I have is when I turn my computer on and open task manager I see that the windows defender processes take a minute or two to start is that normal?

Hello! My name is Cristiano. I'm an Independent Advisor. I'm glad to help you.

    Let's try some additional steps:

    1. Right-click on the taskbar and select "Taskbar settings." Under the "Notification area" section, click on "Select which icons appear on the taskbar" and make sure that the "Windows Defender Security Center" option is set to "On."
    2. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open the Task Manager. Under the "Processes" tab, find "Windows Explorer" and click on "Restart."
    3. You can try reinstalling Windows Defender by using the Windows PowerShell. Open PowerShell as an administrator, and enter the following command:

    Get-AppxPackage *WindowsDefender* | Remove-AppxPackage

After the command finishes, restart your computer, and then open the Windows Store app. Search for "Windows Defender Security Center" and install it.

    1. Run the System File Checker tool again by opening Command Prompt as an administrator (SFC /scannow).
    2. Make sure your Windows operating system and Windows Defender are up-to-date. Go to "Settings" > "Update & Security" > "Windows Update" and click on "Check for updates."

Hopefully, one of these steps will help you.

    Update:

I fixed the issue, I fixed it by opening task manager as soon as my PC turned on and checked if there was a service running before windows defender. There was "Asus Com Service", I have an ASUS motherboard and I have uninstalled its app called "Armoury Crate" so I dont believe there is a need for the Asus services to run, so I set the service to "manual" instead of "automatic" and restarted my PC. Who would of thought the Windows defender notification icon is running in task manager and the icon is on the taskbar. Thank you for your guys help.

I dont think my PC has malware because Windows defender works and all its services are running, I also completed a Malwarebytes full scan and Windows defender full scan and both of them turned out with nothing. Weird part is that turning on my PC with clean boot and following all your steps still didnt help the windows security notification icon to run and the icon to appear.

Hello, I tried the different steps and checked windows defender in settings and everything is on, but sadly the icon and windows defender security notification icon arent running. Im guessing I should just wait and hopefully something happens that brings it back.
