Where is "Desktop"?

  1. I like a nice clean desktop, with no icons, no shortcuts, no files are kept on it for more than two minutes, as I hope can be seen from the background.
  2. When I click on the desktop icon on the left-hand pane of File Explorer... this folder is empty. When I look in the public desktop folder, this folder is empty. When I move up and up through the parents to the top... I get all the stuff on the right-hand side.

Because I have an IQ in excess of sixty, I don't need Microsoft's "help" with setting up default folders for music, videos, and pictures. And I can certainly do without the value-free Libraries.
So my question is very simple - where is that desktop located, and how do I get rid of all the useless clutter on it (I am aware that Windows apparently simply cannot function without Pictures/Videos/Music folders, so I have moved the default locations to somewhere else (i.e. where I can't see them and they don't bother me).

Hello! My name is Cristiano. I'm an Independent Advisor. I'm glad to help you.

By default, the Desktop is located at "C:\Users[Your Username]\Desktop" on your computer's hard drive. However, it sounds like you have moved your desktop folder somewhere else, since you're not seeing any files when you look in the usual places.

To find out where your desktop is located, you can right-click on the desktop itself (i.e. the blank space on your screen) and selecting "Personalize" from the context menu that appears. From there, click on the "Themes" tab, and then click on "Desktop icon settings." In the window that appears, you should see a "Location" field that tells you where your desktop folder is located.

As for getting rid of clutter on your desktop, it's really just a matter of deleting files or moving them to another location. If you don't want to see the "Pictures," "Videos," and "Music" folders on your desktop, you can try hiding them by right-clicking on the desktop, selecting "View," and then unchecking the boxes next to those folders. If you've already moved the default locations of those folders to somewhere else, then you shouldn't see them on your desktop anymore anyway.

    Hope that helps!

I see, it sounds like the "Desktop" folder might not be visible in the "This PC" section of File Explorer. In that case, you can try accessing your desktop folder by going directly to the file path.

    Here's how to do it:

    1. Open up File Explorer.
    2. In the address bar at the top of the window, type in "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop" and hit Enter.
    3. This should take you directly to the folder where all of your desktop files are stored.

If you're still not seeing the Desktop folder, it's possible that it might be hidden or located in a different directory. Let me know if this works for you or if you need further assistance!

It seems that since windows 11, microsoft has increased how much they automatically incorperate onedrive into your experiance, wheather you opt in or not. thankfully you are able to just drag/move everything out of onedrive to your destination of choice (i choose the default path options from windows 10 as thats what im used to.) this only applies to windows 11 as far as i can tell.

    You're welcome.

Let's try find your desktop folder this alternate way:

    1. Click on the Start button (usually located at the bottom left of your screen).
    2. Type "File Explorer" in the search bar and click on it to open it up.
    3. In File Explorer, click on "This PC" in the left-hand navigation menu.
    4. From there, you should see a folder called "Desktop" which should contain all of your desktop files.

If you're still having trouble finding your desktop folder, let me know and I'll try to help you out further.

Thank You Kishi-Neo. This was the final piece of my Notepad "old vs new" workaround. I needed to find an easy place to save New Text Documents for quick and easy access, since the old one can't be opened from within a folder, and have it save within that folder by default. This seems to be an exclusive feature for the New Notepad now.(which I won't use going forward till this is reverted for old notepad)
