Error 0x8007016A: The cloud file provider is not running. OneDrive Access Lost. Cannot open, copy, or move files.

I lost access to a OneDrive account. I cannot regain access to that account. Many (or all) of the files for my OneDrive were present on the local PC when access was lost, but they were in the process of being synced with the cloud copy. The files are now marked with a grey X on the file icon. Any effort to move or copy the files gets the Error 0x8007016A error. Any effort to open the files in Word, Excel, Acrobat get error messages that the file can't be opened.

I believe the files are present on the local PC because the filenames have the correct extensions and the file sizes are what you would expect for a full copy.

It appears like all of these files are locked in some kind of "sync" status for OneDrive that makes them unavailable. Is there any way to force a change in that status to unlock them? I don't need the cloud version, the version on the local PC will be fine.

Good day! I'm Dhanam a Windows user like you and I'll be happy to assist you today. I know this has been difficult for you, Rest assured, I'm going to do my best to help you.

The error message "Error 0x8007016A: The cloud file provider is not running." could mean that OneDrive syncing is turned off. You can easily enable it in OneDrive's settings:

Sign in to OneDrive on your device, and then select the OneDrive icon ( ) in the taskbar notification area.

    Select Help & Settings ( ) > Settings. ...

    Reset OneDrive.

(Optional) After you reset OneDrive, turn on Files On-Demand if you need it.

Try again to copy files in OneDrive,

you can also try the solution in this page:

    Dear Dhanam,

Where have you been for the past eight months of my life? I have searched for solutions to this issue too many times to mention and gone down so many rabbit holes that I had decided it was time to give up. It was time to take my laptop to a computer repair store on Monday but today I gave it one last try and your reply showed up on the Microsoft website. Without believing such an easy fix could possibly work, I still followed your instructions. When I went back to look at my documents, I almost shouted! All of those pesky locks were gone! And it took me less than five minutes to read and follow your advice. You will never know how much your knowledge and ability to convey this information means to those of us whose brains are not wired for technology.

I do not know if this is your job or if it is a hobby. If it is a job, you deserve a raise!! You provide a valuable service to those of us who are desperate for it. Thank you so very much!

    Sincerely,

    Betty Stockman

I have been doing computers for more than half a century. I do not know what Sign in to OneDrive means.

Are you getting the same error as in the title of this discussion? Do you have a OneDrive icon in the lower-right area of Windows?

You don't know how to click on onedrive and type your email and password in? How can you not know what sign in to onedrive means?

    Hi Marshall-S,

I have a similar, if not same problem. Were you able to access the local files on the PC that threw the 'Error 0x8007016A'.

    Best regards.
