What is the difference between sleep mode and your screen turning off. For laptops.

I have an HP laptop and I have the Steam store installed. I have set up Steam Link, so I can play some of my Steam games on my phone if I am out of town. I know I have to have my computer on for it to work while I am away. I see in my setting showing Screen off after so long and Sleep after so long. Which one do I use to have my laptop still running in the background and still have Steam and my USB devices running? The only USB device that has to stay running is my external hard drive, due to the fact I have my games installed on it. I also have running overnight. Yes, I know I can turn down the brightness setting. I just want to know if there is a way I can have my laptop running in the background and have it not show what is on my screen.

    Hi Jonathan,

My name is Igor, it's a pleasure for me to help others and I'll do all my best to help you.

When a screen is turned off, a PC works as usual, just show you nothing. During sleep some computer components are powered but other don't, and computer cannot do any work on background.

You may lock your laptop (Win+L); your session and all apps will run as usual, but screen will show welcome screen and it will be needed to enter Windows to continue working and see the screen.

    Hey.

    Classed by energy save :

    1. Screen saver (PC is running 100% except the monitor)
    2. Sleep mode
    3. Hibernation

Screen off will continue running processes (such as Steam) and simply turns off your screen. Sleep, on the other hand, will no longer run any processes; it will simply remember where you left off once you open your computer. It seems like screen off is what you want.

Ok. My 2 question are; 1) Are screensaver still a thing. I am running Windows 10. 2) Is that the best option to do while I am away? The main reason I want it to always be running is so I am able to use Steam Link on my phone while I am away.

I dont use steam so i dont know whats the best.

Try the 3 states beginning with the less energy : hibernation , sleep , screen saver.
