Windows 10 64bit on an iMac 9,1

Hi everybody,

I have an early 2009 iMac 9,1, Intel 2.6ghz 64bit processor, 8gb DDR3 memory. It's old, but perfectly adequate. Apple no longer support this machine and the last OS version was El Capitan, which now produces too many security problems.

My Windows 10 laptop has died so I want to install Windows 10 64bit version on the iMac. However, there is some sort of code in the bios of the imac that will not allow the installation of the 64 bit version. Bootcamp will not allow it. I have tried all sorts of fixes from the Internet but none work.

HOWEVER, it accepts the 32 bit version of Windows 10 (after a manual partition) and apart from some booting up glitch where I have to manually select the Windows drive, the 32 bit version is up and running fine. It's a bit slow though as it can only address 4gb of the 8gb memory.

I would love to upgrade to the 64bit but the iMac is having none of it. I have tried downloading the 64bit from microsoft to a USB, but on booting up the imac doesn't see the USB drive. If I download the 64bit version from the IOS (el capitan), it creates an EFI file on the usb, which then can be seen on boot, but points the installation back to IOS where it fails.

The same thing happened when I tried a DVD .iso copy.

If anyone can suggest a remedy I will be very grateful.

    1. pas dit toe
    2. zo maak im me win 11 dvd 64x dvd
    6. Start een Windows-opdrachtprompt met beheerdersrechten. Wijzig de map in de map C:\TEMP.

    Many thanks Elaine S S.

That is a very comprehensive reply which answers my question fully. I am not confident enough to edit the firmware so I will have to be satisfied with the 32bit version.

Thanks again for your help and support.

    I Understand.

The early 2009 iMac (iMac9,1) uses a 64-bit Intel Core 2 Duo processor, which technically supports 64-bit architecture. However, Apple's firmware and drivers are designed to work with macOS and may not fully support running a 64-bit version of Windows on that specific model.

While it might be possible to modify the firmware or find workarounds to enable 64-bit Windows on your iMac, it is a complex and potentially risky process that may void your warranty or cause other unexpected issues. Therefore, it is generally recommended to use the officially supported operating system versions for your specific Mac model.

    Hi Foxintheden,

Its a pleasure to help you with this,

Unfortunately, installing a 64-bit version of Windows on your Early 2009 iMac (9.1 model) may not be possible due to hardware limitations. iMac 9.1 officially only supports a 32-bit version of Windows.

    Any more questions?
