Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller drivers are missing, thunderbolt port does not work at all. Asus TUF F17 FX707ZM.

I got this laptop (Asus TUF F17 FX707ZM) around December of 2022. It was working great. It came with Windows 11 but I had to swap SSDs so I installed Windows 10. Ever since, I've had this issue where the Thunderbolt port does not work. I tried fixing it a while ago, reset multiple times, wiped everything and installed all the drivers I could find from Asus, nothing worked. Then I installed Windows 11 and the problem remained, came back to Windows 10 and I gave up. Eventually the port started working with no input from me, and now it stopped again. I have no idea what's going on. I can't hook up my monitor, plug in my phone, or anything. I have a pair of headphones that have a USB C dongle, and it works on the port above the Thunderbolt port, but that port also doesn't recognize my phone. I have no idea what's causing this behaviour or how to fix it. Any help would be very much appreciated.

    Hello John,

Thanks for all your help, I just looked at my profile to see that I have posted this question a month prior. I didn't get any notification for the reply, but someone suggested unplugging the battery for an hour to see if it would resolve the issue. I just did that, and to my surprise, the port now works. The missing driver still shows up in device manager, but I am getting display out from the port. Thank you for your suggestions and for taking time out of your day to help, without you and the other user, I would have been at this for much longer. So thank you again, and I hope you take care.

    Sincerely,

    Mikle.

    You’re welcome, Mikle!

I’m glad to hear that unplugging the battery for an hour helped resolve the issue with the Thunderbolt port. It’s great that you’re now able to get display output from the port. Thank you for letting me know and for your kind words. Have a great day!

    Best regards,

    John J.D.

    Hi Mikle,

Thanks for getting back to me.

I understand that you have already tried several troubleshooting steps, including uninstalling and reinstalling drivers, and the issue still persists.

It’s possible that installing Windows onto the new SSD may have caused some software issues, but it’s difficult to say for certain without further testing.

If you’re unable to send your laptop in for repair due to needing it for work, one option could be to try using an external USB hub as a temporary workaround.

This would allow you to connect multiple USB devices to your laptop through a single USB port.

    Hello John,

First off, thank you for replying. I have already tried uninstalling the drivers for multiple USB devices, hubs, and controllers. I have installed all the drivers from Intel and Asus pertaining to this issue, and I have tried setting it to a generic USB hub. When I tried setting it to a generic USB hub, it failed so I tried different drivers to no avail.

I really hope it isn't a hardware issue, it was working previously. I suspect that once I had installed Windows onto the new SSD, something might've been broken in terms of software, since the laptop was originally a Windows 11 machine. I have tried going back to Windows 11 but that only changes the name of the device with the missing driver to USB4 Virtual Power Coordination Device.

I really hope I don't need to send this in, because I need it for work. I can't go without it, so I've been trying absolutely everything. I bought it brand new from Amazon, not open box or refurbished.

    Again, thanks for your reply.

    Sincerely,

    Mikle.

    Hi Mikle,

I am John J.D., a fellow Microsoft user like you.

Have you tried uninstalling the USB Root Hub driver in Device Manager, restarting your computer, and then letting Windows automatically reinstall the driver?

I understand that you’ve already tried several troubleshooting steps and the issue still persists.

It is possible that the issue is not related to the software or operating system since you have already tried resetting and reinstalling Windows 10 and the issue still persists.

It’s possible that there could be a hardware issue with the Thunderbolt port or the motherboard. In this case, it would be best to take your laptop to an ASUS customer service center for further tests and diagnosis. I hope this helps.

Please let me know if you have any further questions or concerns. Let's work together to resolve the issue.

    Best regards,

    John J.D.
