Windows 11 Daily Random Crash/Shutdown
My computer is crashing (random shutdown, no restarts or BSOD) several times daily and has been for a month or two. At first it was sporadic, and I thought related to overstraining the system while gaming, but it would also crash during sleep mode almost inevitably. Now it crashes three or four times in the first 10 minutes after startup and then runs almost as normal for the rest of the day. (And by as normal, I mean it still might crash 1-3 times after that. If put into sleep mode or switched off during the day, the pattern repeats.)
The pattern is similar while gaming: the system will crash a few times immediately after starting a game (even on initial load screens) and then work fine for awhile (with intermittent crashes).
When the computer does shut down, the case fans go into high gear as though it had overheated (no indication that it is overheating) and remain running on high speed until I press the on/off button for a manual shutdown.
The system has only been able to create minidump files a handful of times.
After researching on these forums quite a bit, here are some of the things I've tried:
- Windows update
- Upgrade to Windows 11 (the problem started on 10, I upgraded, it continued or worsened)
- Windows check all drivers
- Manually update graphics and sound drivers (the graphics were way out of date but new drivers didn't change anything)
- Change all the various power and sleep mode settings recommended for random Kernel 41 errors for other similar situations
Of the causes I've seen suggested in similar situations, I think I've narrowed it down to:
- a BIOS problem
- a PSU problem
But with random shutdowns and the possibility of destroying my system if a BIOS update is in progress, and the cost of buying a new PSU, I don't really want to try these on my own without seeing if I can get a more concrete diagnosis for the problem. (I don't have access to a spare PSU, or I'd plug that in and see what happens.)

2023-07-20T19:00:24+00:00 Yes, I did end up uninstalling the old version before updating the graphics driver, should have mentioned that was part of the process. Unfortunately, I don't have ready access to another PSU with the wattage to run my current machine, though I'm asking around to see if anyone I know has an extra one laying around...

I'm running 22H2 and I meant to say that I did upgraded the video drivers (new as of 7.18.23), it just didn't solve the problem.
I never get BSOD: it just shuts off and the fans kick into overdrive. It almost never registers any error codes in the Event Viewer or creates a minidup either. All the info I get is the surprise shutdown code: Kernel-Power 41 (63).
No issues with dust--compressed air was the first thing I tried!
I had run my existing anti-malware software, but tried out Malwarebytes with the setting you recommended just now and it didn't find anything.
I also ran the three Powershell commands and they all completed successfully without reporting anything wrong or fixed.

Sorry to hear you’re experiencing problems. May I ask which Windows 10/11 build are you running - 21H2 or 22H2?
Can you provide the error code on BSoD?
As your graphics driver was so out of date I would cleanly uninstall it & install the latest.
Please do not download any other software on the site, especially driver installation software.
I would recommend downloading the latest version of the graphics card driver before running DDU.
I would also double check for any dust or debris around & inside the pc & the fans.
If you can get the pc to stay on long enough you can try:
Right click on start & choose powershell/terminal with admin & type/copy & paste these cmds one at a time then click Enter:
SFC /SCANNOW
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
And scan for malware:
Try running these programs:

Also check the router to see if there are any unknown connections:

If these find one or more infections but do not fully remove them it will be wise to register with a malware removal site to receive dedicated malware removal instructions, an expert will remain with you throughout the process until confirmation that your PC is 100% clean.
