1394 Host controller missing from device manager

What has happened? I wanted to capture some videos to my Win 11 Pro PC but Premiere (CS6 & 2023) says device offline. Said device being Sony HVR-25E and working well. It has been awhile from the last use of a video editor, therefore can't tell when this started.

I have now combed through the internet to find a solution but it seems that that the driver has been removed from Win 11? can this be? I have a lot of DVCAM tapes. Must I change to MAC?

Can anyone help, please?

Kind regards,

Kalle

Thanj you Li for your effort.

As it happens, I did finally find the 1394 Host Controller. It was hidden by Windows (Device Manager-View-Show hidden devices). One chapter in

www.studio1productions.com/Articles/Firewire-1.htm led me to this find. Can't recall which chapter and sentence,

Unfortunately the info I got from the host controllers was that the cable should be reconnected. No joy there. After a lot of troubleshooting and investigating, I stumbled to a video in Youtube (How to use legacy FireWire and Thunderbolt devices on new PC's with Thunderbolt 4

    by

Scott Schramm) that gave me the answer. With my 12 gen Intel cpu (i9-12900K) i will not be able to connect Firewire to my pc. Period. There. Have to refurbish my older pc...

    Hello, Kalle Ilvesmäki

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

I found a similar question in Microsoft Community: how do I activate my ieee 1394 port in Windows 11 - Microsoft Community. You can refer to the suggestions in the replies. As for the drivers, you may need to search it online or get it from a third-party site, as Windows 11 doesn't seem to have this driver built in it.

By the way, Adobe Premier CS6 is a very old version. Even if you successfully install the related drivers on Windows 11, you may still encounter compatibility issues. If you must use this version, consider running it on an older version of Windows, such as Windows 7. While on Windows 11 you can try running Adobe Premier CS6 in compatibility mode, there's no guarantee of performance.

As for Mac, I'm not sure if you can still find and install an older version of MacOS. Running older software on the latest version of MacOS can also run into compatibility issues, so please consider your decision carefully.

Let me know if you have any other concerns.

    Best regards

    Yuhao Li

I’m glad that you found the 1394 Host Controller, but I’m sorry that it didn’t work with your new PC. It seems that Firewire is not compatible with the latest Intel CPUs. That’s unfortunate.

Maybe you can use your older PC for capturing videos from your Sony device, and then transfer them to your new PC for editing. Or you can look for some adapters or converters that can connect Firewire to USB or Thunderbolt. I don’t know if they will work, but it might be worth a try.

Thank you for sharing your experience and the links. I’m sure they will be helpful for other users who have similar issues, and I've marked your reply as helpful. I appreciate your feedback and patience.

If you have any other questions or concerns, please feel free to ask me. I’m always happy to help.

It sounds like your 1394 OHCI Host Controller is not recognized by Windows 11. Here are some more possible solutions:

Try to enable 1394 in the BIOS. To do this, you need to reboot your PC and enter the BIOS setup menu. Depending on your PC model, you may need to press a certain key (such as F2, F10, or Del) to access the BIOS. Then, look for an option related to 1394, Firewire, or IEEE 1394 and make sure it is enabled. Save the changes and exit the BIOS. Then, check if the device manager can detect the host controller. Back up all your personal files first to ensure you do not lose data.

Try to use the Add Hardware Wizard to manually add the host controller: FireWire port-based device does not work correctly in Windows 8.1 or Windows 8 - Microsoft Support. The steps should also work in Windows 11.

By the way, make sure you have the suitable cable, as Sony suggests: Where to obtain an i.LINK (IEEE 1394) cable to connect a digital device to a computer. | Sony USA

If none of the above methods work, you may need to contact Sony support for further assistance. They may have some specific drivers or firmware updates for your PC or device that can resolve the issue: Contact Us - Electronics Product Support | Sony USA

Thank you Li for the answer.

My problem is there is no 1394 OHCI Host Controller in the device manager list. Therefore the suggested solution does not work. However it is in Program Files (x86) folder. How to get it back to Device Manager? It was there last year if I recall it right and because everything worked.

    Win 11 Pro

Ps. Previously (2022) both the CS6 and the CC versions worked well, no compatibility issues with either program.
