Will paperport work with any windows machine and any printer or does it have to be a brother printer? I have an hp 5520 photosmart printer.

PaperPort is not software that is specific to Brother devices, it is software created by Kofax, though Brother do seem to customize a version of that for their own devices, it would be best to contact the software developers on their website to check if it is compatible with your HP 5520 printer
