Unable to remove users - requires permissions

I want to remove all existing users in a PC. I am logged in as administrator. If there are multiple users on the machine, I am able to delete some but not others. With those I am unable to delete, it requires permissions although I am already logged in as administrator. Usually the most recent active user is the one that persists. Any workaround on this one without having to actually reset the PC? Thank you.

Please go to Settings > Accounts > Access Work or School > if any account is linked, disconnect and try to remove users or delete the folder to see if you can.

If not, you may need to reset Windows.

If the user account folder still exists locally, but you cannot find it through Computer Management or the command prompt, it's possible that the account is a Microsoft account linked to Azure Active Directory (Azure AD). In such cases, removing the account completely may require additional steps.

    1. Open the "Settings" app on your PC by pressing Win + I.
    2. Go to "Accounts" and select "Email & accounts" from the left-hand menu.
    3. Under the "Accounts used by other apps" section, look for the user account you want to remove and click on it.
    4. Select the "Remove" button and follow the prompts to remove the account.

By removing the account from the "Email & Accounts" settings, you may be able to delete the associated user folder from the local disk without having to reset the PC.

Hello, Mostafa. Thank you for the suggestions you provided. I have tried both methods but neither works.

The user account I am trying to remove/delete could not be found either through Computer Management or through cmd prompt. However, I can browse to This PC > Local Disk (C:) > Users and a folder for the user account can be found. However, when I hover over the folder, it is empty as I have previously attempted to delete it earlier.

Is this because the account still exists in Azure and only the folder remains local? At any rate, what I aim is to delete the (empty) folder short of resetting the PC.

    Thanks for the help.

Hello! My name is Mostafa; I will assist you today.

I’m sorry that you are experiencing this issue.

    Method 1

    1. Open Start.
    2. Search for Computer Management and click the top result to open Computer Management.
    3. Browse the following path: Computer Management > System Tools > Local Users and Groups > Users
    4. Right-click the user and select the Delete option.
    5. Click the Yes button.

    Method 2

    1. Search for Command Prompt, right-click the top result, and select the Run as administrator option.
    2. Type the following command to note the available user accounts and press Enter: net user
    3. Type the following command to delete the user account on Windows 11 and press Enter: net user USER-NAME /delete

In the command, replace "USER-NAME" for the name of the account to delete. This example deletes the "JohnSmith" account: net user JohnSmith /delete

Please let me know if the above steps did not help. Thank you.

You're quite right, the account is a Microsoft account linked to Azure AD. I have not implemented your latest suggestion yet as I want to make sure that doing so will NOT DELETE or mess about with the user's account on Azure AD. All I need to do is to "wipe" the laptop of all previous users and their associated local accounts and have the laptop ready for the next user. By implementing the above, can you please confirm it will only remove the associated user folder locally and NOT DELETE anything associated with the user's account on Azure AD and elsewhere online within Microsoft?

    Awaiting your confirmation. Thank you.
