Moving Windows from SSD to HDD

Hi all!

I am looking to upgrade my SSD (where windows is installed). Ideally I want to transfer everything from the old SSD to the new SSD (Both M.2). I would like to know If I can transfer windows to my HDD and back to my new SSD or if I need to do something else.

I am not great with computers so a dumbed down response on steps of how to do things would be really appreciated.

Many thanks,

Ben.

You just need to backup the data on the HDD somewhere else, because you will be initially cloning the SSD onto the HDD and that would delete the data from the HDD

Then you will ne inserting the new SSD and cloning the HDD onto that.

Honestly, this is a complex task and if you have never done something like this before, it would be best to get someone there to help you with this, to ensure you do not loose your data.

Okay, that makes sense. But is there any way to transfer the windows software from my old SSD to the HDD that I already have installed and then back to the new SSD once I install that? (Would this work by the Macrium software if I can?)

    Hi Ben,

I am Dave, I will help you with this.

You can only transfer everything from one SSD to the other SSD if you can connect both drives to your PC at the same time.

If you can do that, you can use the free version of Macruim Reflect to clone the old drive onto the new drive, that is great software and easy to use.

If you cannot connect both the SSD's to your PC at the same tie, you cannot move all the data to the new drive, you would need to backup all your personal files, then clean install Windows using a bootable USB and then install all your software on the new SSD.

There is no longer a free version of Macrium Reflect, although there is a 30-day free trial.

The manufacturer of the new SSD may have instructions and/or utility software that will help you copy from your old SSD to the new one. You might start there first.
