Posted 15th April, 2020. Old information that you should check with Norton,.
Hi Bill Smithers:
I noted in csanjay's 25-May-2023 thread Windows supported versions in the Norton Community that "I just sent a private message to a user who uses a legacy Norton v22.15.5.40 product on their Vista SP2 machine and they confirmed that they are still receiving regular virus (SDS) definition updates and other protection updates."
The Norton support article you referenced at System Requirements to Install and Set Up Norton Protection (last revised 15-May-2023) only applies to the current Norton v22.23.x and higher product lines for Win 7 SP1 and higher. If you scroll to the bottom of that support article there is a footnote that states " * We have moved Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 SP0 (Service Pack 0) versions of our security software into Maintenance Mode. For more information, read Maintenance Mode for Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 SP0 for Norton security software". In this case "Windows 7 SP0" just means Win 7 with no SP1 service pack installed.
That Norton support article Maintenance Mode for Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 SP0 for Norton security software (last modified 23-Mar-2023) states in part:
What does "Maintenance Mode" mean? Maintenance Mode means that the Norton security software installed on Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 SP0 will continue to receive certain services, like malware definition updates, but that certain other services, like new product capabilities, will no longer be provided. What services will continue in Maintenance Mode?
- Your Norton security software will continue to receive the latest malware definitions by LiveUpdate*.*
- Your Norton security software will continue to receive vulnerability updates and compatibility fixes*.*
- You will continue to enjoy the Virus Protection Promise*, if applicable.
This means that the legacy Norton v22.15.5.40 for Win XP SP3 and Vista SP2 does not have some of the newer features included in the current Norton 360 v22.23.x product line (e.g., Norton Software Updater, Norton Smart Scan, Norton Secure VPN, etc.) and it is unlikely that major changes will be made to the legacy virus scan engine going forward. However, these legacy products receive regular protection updates for virus (SDS) definitions, Intrusion Protection System (IPS) definitions, etc. and should continue to do so until NortonLifeLock announces an end-of-life date for these legacy products.
