Japanese IME input buggy?

I use Japanese input a lot and it's always been somewhat buggy in my opinion.

Often times when I switch to Japanese from English, it defaults to Half-width alphanumeric mode instead of my preferred Hiragana mode. So I'm constantly having to switch back and forth.

Often times when I'm in MS Edge, the Japanese language will act strangely in that it will "finalize" my individual inputs before I have time to type in the next character/letter to complete a two-character/letter hiragana.

If I do it quickly, I can get た (ta), but if I type normally or pause, I'll get tあ (t+individual "a").

This goes further that when I'm typing the hiragana, it doesn't allow me to get the Japanese kanji suggestion list to pop up. So I can't put anything in Kanji because the system "finalized" my input to mいず instead of みず / 水.

This problem also recently came up in Chrome when I was using Outlook, so I really want to figure out what the issue is.

I've attached a video that shows the issue: https://www.dropbox.com/s/c3pchb8fylu7029/Japanesetypingincorrect.mp4?dl=0

Any help would be great, thanks!

    Hello frog11,

    Welcome to the Microsoft community.

We have also tested here, Japanese IME does open a new window with English input by default, and you need to switch to hiragana input once manually. After switching to hiragana input, you can continue to use hiragana input when you switch to Japanese IME again, even if you switch to another input method, as long as you do not switch windows. This seems to be a design problem, so we suggest you to give feedback through the feedback center.

Send feedback to Microsoft with the Feedback Hub app - Microsoft Support

However, it is not normal to enter "ta" and have it recognized as "tあ".

Have you tried to reinstall the Japanese language pack? If not, please try it to see if it can be restored.

Open Start>Settings>Time and Language>Language and Region, find Japanese and uninstall it, then add Japanese again.

If the above methods do not solve the problem, we suggest you use the previous version of Microsoft IME and see if the problem still occurs.

Right-click the ”A/あ” in the bottom right corner of your desktop , select Settings > General, and under Compatibility, turn on Use previous version of Microsoft IME.

If there's anything that's not clear, don't hesitate to let me know.

    Sincerely

Carlos - MSFT | Microsoft Community Support Specialisto

Hello! My name is Mostafa; I will assist you today.

I’m sorry that you are experiencing this issue. There are a few things that might be causing the issue.

One possibility is that the default input method is not set to the Japanese Microsoft IME. You can check this by going to your Windows settings and selecting “Time & language” > “Language & Region” > “Japanese” > “Language options” > “Microsoft IME” > “Keyboard options”.

Another possibility is that there is a glitch in the Windows keyboard setting or the language pack itself. You can try resetting your keyboard settings or reinstalling the language pack.

If you still have issue please create another local account to check if the issue persists.

Please let me know if the above steps did not help. Thank you.

I'm afraid I'm running out of ideas. Let's ask other advisors and Teams users for suggestions that might help you.

They would be able to reply to this thread and share their comments.

Your patience will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the suggestion. However, there's no difference if Japanese or English is set as the default language.

The problem arises because within Japanese IME, there are still two options of language input, hiragana and the Japanese-version of English. It's the latter that Japanese defaults to, and I'd prefer it default to hiragana input. I've looked all over but can't seem to find an option for that : /
