Cannot import pictures from iPhone to PC

Hi,

I have been sitting in front of my PC for over an hour now, trying to figure out why the "Pictures" app either won't recognize my iPhone or stops importing my pictures after 9 or so have been imported. The thing is, I know the PC itself recognizes the connection. I can see it in the settings and the iTunes App - which the Apple Website said to have installed and is absolutely useless - also recognizes a physical connection between my phone and the PC. I have no idea what the problem could be. I found one comment somewhere saying it might be compability issues with the new Apple pictures format (HEIC), but if so I desperately need a workaround since I haven't saved my pictures since three years.

    Hello Lukas E.H.

    Welcome to the Microsoft Community.

According to your current description, it seems that there are some problems in importing pictures from iPhone to PC. Generally Speaking, HEIF and HEVC image formats are more suitable for iOS and MAC systems. You can see from the following Apple support article:

Using HEIF or HEVC media on Apple devices - Apple Support

In addition to downloading the iTunes application, you can also try to check the following places:

If iCloud is enabled on your iOS device, you won’t be able to download your photos or videos. Your images exist on iCloud but not on your device. If you want to open or import these photos or videos to your PC, do so using the iCloud desktop app. For more info, see Get help with iCloud photos on Apple’s website.

If it is in HEIF and HEVC format, you can also refer to the converter mentioned by Angelo B37. in the following thread, and then observe whether the photo is successfully imported on Windows after conversion.

If the Windows Photos app doesn't work for you, there are a few other things you can try, like using Windows Explorer.

For how to use Windows Explorer to import pictures from your iPhone. Here are the steps:

    • Connect your iPhone to your PC with a USB cable.
    • Unlock your iPhone and tap Trust or Allow when asked to trust the PC.
    • On your PC, open File Explorer and navigate to This PC.
    • Locate your iPhone under Devices and Drives and right-click on it.
    • Select Import Pictures and Videos from the menu that appears.
    • An Import Pictures and Videos window will appear. Windows will scan the pictures folder on your iPhone to look for photos and videos it can copy to your PC.
    • After Windows has found all the new photos and videos it hasn’t imported before, it will show you how many can be imported. You can choose to review, organize, and group the items to import, or you can select Import all new items now and click Import.
    • During the import process, Windows will copy the photos and videos to a new time-stamped folder in your Pictures folder by default. If you want to erase all the photos and videos from your iPhone after you’re done importing, you can check the box next to Erase After Importing. Be careful with this option as it will delete all the imported photos and videos from your iPhone.
    • When the import is complete, you can open your Pictures folder and find a dated folder that contains all the photos and videos that you just imported.
