Why does my keyboard only type numbers on the log in page, once logged in it works normally.

Hi Can anyone help.

I have managed with the help of this community via a previous post to get my Acer laptop keyboard typing number and letters once I am logged in but the problem now is that unless I am logged in my keyboard does not work properly. If I log out and the local log in screen comes up it will only allow me to type numbers. I managed to change my local log in to all numbers so can get into the laptop but do not understand why the keyboard will not type letters on the local log in screen page on my laptop.

I tried getting rid of local log in and logging straight into Microsoft but it did not work and any log in seems to resort to the keyboard only typing numbers.

I have uninstalled keyboard drivers and rebooted and also followed instructions for fn and F11 keys but still only typing numbers. Once I am logged in the keyboard types works normally.

Would someone be able to help let me know what to do to fix it.

Laptop is Aspire A315-58

    Hi

Thank you so much for this advice. I will work through each of the steps and report back.

One extra thing scanning down to your last step- how do I log in as administrator. I am the only one who uses this laptop.

    Thanks

    Hi

    Thanks for your reply.

To open Command Prompt as an administrator in Windows 10, follow these steps:

    Using the Start Menu

    1. Click on the Start button (Windows logo) in the bottom-left corner of your screen.
    2. Search for "Command Prompt" in the search bar.
    3. Right-click on "Command Prompt" in the search results.
    4. From the context menu, select "Run as administrator."
    5. If prompted for confirmation or the user account control (UAC) password, provide the necessary credentials.

    Hi

    Welcome to Microsoft community.

The issue you are experiencing with your Acer laptop's keyboard can be quite frustrating, but there are several troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve it. Here are some solutions to consider:

    1. Check Num Lock Key: It's possible that the Num Lock key is activated on the login screen, which can cause the keyboard to type numbers instead of letters. Try pressing the Num Lock key on your keyboard to toggle it on/off and see if that changes the behavior.
    2. Try a Different User Account: Create a new user account on your laptop and see if the issue persists when logging in with the new account. This will help determine if the problem is specific to your user profile.
    3. Disable Fast Startup: Windows 10's Fast Startup feature can sometimes cause keyboard issues. Disable Fast Startup and check if the problem is resolved:
      • Go to "Control Panel" > "Power Options."
      • Click on "Choose what the power buttons do" on the left sidebar.
      • Click on "Change settings that are currently unavailable."
      • Uncheck "Turn on fast startup" and click "Save changes."
    4. Update Windows and Drivers: Make sure your Windows 10 and all drivers, including the keyboard driver, are up to date. Go to "Settings" > "Update & Security" > "Windows Update" and check for updates. Additionally, visit Acer's official website to download the latest keyboard drivers for your laptop model.
    5. Run System File Checker (SFC) and DISM: Open Command Prompt as an administrator and run the following commands one by one: sfc /scannow DISM /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth Restart your laptop after these processes are complete.

Please feel free to let me know if you have any further updates, thanks.

    Best regards
