The "microphone volume" setting does not adjust my microphone volume.

I had recently gotten a new laptop (Dell New G15), and although it works wonderfully, it does not work with my mic well, seeing as how my old laptop did not have this problem.

To summarize, my headset microphone is very quiet, and barely anyone can hear me, not even myself. I tried to adjust my microphone volume, but whether it's at 1 or 100, it's the same. I could potentially enable audio enhancements, but it also worsens my microphone quality a lot.

Here's what I've tried so far:

  • Reinstalling the microphone driver
  • Reinstalling the Realtek Audio Driver
  • Switching sound drivers
  • Using a third party app to boost my microphone, which weirdly did not work as well unless I enabled audio enhancements.
  • Restarting my laptop
  • Disabling and enabling the drivers

And here are some specs I think might be important (I don't know if this will help):

  • Processor 13th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-13650HX, 2600 Mhz, 14 Core(s), 20 Logical Processor(s)
  • Installed Physical Memory (RAM) 16.0 GB
  • Windows 11

I really want my microphone to be heard by people, so any help would be greatly appreciated. I did look at another post that asked the same question, but the solution did not work for me.

    Hello Zemblance,

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

According to your description, your DELL G15 laptop can recognize your microphone normally, so by clicking Start menu- Settings - System - Sound, you can "type" to see the name of the microphone, right?

At this point please click on your microphone, then click on the right of "Test microphone" to start the test, after speaking at normal volume for a few seconds, stop the test, please let me know the test results.

When I test with 100% microphone volume on, I usually speak at 15%-20% of the maximum volume at normal volume because I don't make any particular effort to speak.

The enhanced audio feature in this option does reduce the audio quality, but please click "More sound Settings" at the bottom of the sound, then click "Record", locate your microphone device, click Properties - Advanced, check "Enable Audio enhancement" in the signal enhancement column, then click "OK" to save (Audio enhancement here is different from that in microphone properties, You can test if it can help you).

If you find that the percentage displayed is the same as what I described, this is normal. Please click on "Input Devices" to the right of Troubleshooting Common Sounds to troubleshoot your microphone and let me know the results.

Also, if possible, test other microphones in your device to check whether they have the same problem.

    Best regards,

    Hi Zemblance,

Thank you for your additional clarification.

I noticed that you noted here that you are using a jack microphone, which means that you are using a 3.5mm port and not a computer connected via USB? Please allow me to introduce some specifications of the 3.5mm port:

Polarity: 3.5mm ports are typically designed with 3 and 4 poles. The 3-pole connector has three contact points for transmitting left channel audio, right channel audio, and ground. The 4-pole connector has four contact points, including a microphone channel in addition to the left channel, right channel and ground.

Plug type: 3.5mm ports are classified into TS, TRS and TRRS plug types.

    • TS (Tip Sleeve) plug: A 3-pole connector for the transmission of left, right and ground channels.
    • TRS (Tip Ring Sleeve) plug: A 4-pole connector used to transmit left channel, right channel, ground wire, and microphone signals.
    • TRRS (Tip Ring Ring Sleeve) plug: A 4-pole connector used to transmit left and right channel, ground, and microphone signals, while also supporting other functions such as remote control buttons and sensor signals.

If the connector does not match the plug (although they are both 35.mm), it will lead to misalignment of the connector contacts, which will greatly affect the input sound, whether it is the size or the quality of the sound. I'm not sure if that's what's causing the problem, but I think it's possible.

Alternatively, you might want to test your microphone device by connecting it to another computer to see if the same thing happens. Because I think your microphone is probably not damaged, getting it is just that.

Finally, if you want to debug your microphone as much as possible, I highly recommend that you contact your microphone supplier or support department who can assist you with debugging your microphone.

    Best regards,

    Hello, Mitchell.

Testing my jack microphone (Jack Mic) gives me a result around 3% to 5% volume regardless of what volume I put it at when I talk in a loud tone. The same even goes for when I use audio enhancements.

Using the built-in microphone (Microphone Array), however, seems to work, as the volume is at 1% at lower volumes and as high as 100% when I put it at 100 volume.

I also should note that apps that are able to adjust my microphone for calls (e.g Skype, Discord, etc.) are able to adjust my microphone volume just fine on their respective apps; it's purely the settings microphone volume slider that doesn't work.
