My microphone isn't working with third party apps (Solved)

*This issue has been resolved. See last post*

I have been using my laptop for several months now and my microphone has always worked fine. Today I have noticed that it is having problems.

The microphone works fine on settings> sound >input. The microphone is called Microphone Array Intel Smart Sound Technology for Digital Microphones.

But when I try to use Zoom, Discord, Steam, or any other third party app, the apps are not detecting audio.

I have gone into Privacy and Security> Microphone and allowed microphone access. I have also enabled Let desktop apps access your microphone. I can also see the access requests under recent activity and they all say accessed.

In the control panel, under recording, my microphone array is set as default and is enabled.

I have also used HP's driver and support assistant to check for driver updates. After detecting my laptop it states that all the drivers are up to date. I cannot find a manual download for my microphone driver.

I am using Windows 11, and my laptop system model is HP ENVY LAPTOP 17-ch0000

Ok so I have figured out what the problem is and thought I would share the solution in case anyone has the same issue.

So my laptop has Bang & Olufsen on it and its caused some problems. I had to go the Bang & Olufsen app, select noise cancellation, and turn off "All noise removal applied to input device". Once I did that, it all started to work again.

    Hope this helps someone.

Hey Horseman82, I am sorry to hear that after those isolation steps, you still don't have a resolution. Have you noticed any new changes since this started happening? Has there been any new software or any updates that took place around the same time?

    Kind regards,

    Shantal.

Hi. I have done all of your suggestions and no change.

The troubleshoot could not detect any problems.

    I am using Windows security.

I have used the built in mic on third party apps many times as I work from home and use Zoom often. This has only started very recently

Hello Horseman82, thank you for your inquiry. My name is Shantal I'm an independent advisor, I am happy to help.

I understand that your microphone is not working with third-party apps on your HP Envy laptop running Windows 11. This can be frustrating, but let's go through some troubleshooting steps to try and resolve the issue:

    1. **Check App Permissions**: Open each third-party app (Zoom, Discord, Steam, etc.) and check their individual microphone settings. Ensure that the microphone is enabled and allowed for each app. Sometimes, apps have their own settings separate from the system settings.
    2. **Restart the Apps**: Close all the third-party apps that are not detecting the microphone and then restart them. Sometimes, a simple restart can help fix app-related issues.
    3. **Check Microphone Privacy Settings**: Double-check the microphone privacy settings in Windows 11: a. Click on the Windows icon in the bottom left corner, then click on "Settings" (the gear icon). b. Go to "Privacy & Security," then "Microphone." c. Make sure that "Allow apps to access your microphone" is turned on. d. Scroll down and ensure that each app you want to use the microphone with has the microphone permission enabled.
    4. **Update Audio Drivers**: Even though you used the Intel Driver and Support Assistant, it's worth manually checking for audio driver updates: a. Go to the HP support website (support.hp.com). b. Enter your laptop model (HP ENVY LAPTOP 17-ch0xxx) and search for drivers. c. Look for the latest audio driver for your laptop, download it, and install it.
    5. **Run Windows Troubleshooter**: Windows has built-in troubleshooters that can detect and fix common problems. Here's how to run the audio troubleshooter: a. Click on the Windows icon in the bottom left corner, then click on "Settings" (the gear icon). b. Go to "System," then "Sound." c. Under "Troubleshoot," click on "Troubleshoot" next to "Sound problems." d. Follow the on-screen instructions to run the troubleshooter.
    6. **Check Antivirus/Firewall**: Some antivirus or firewall settings can block microphone access for apps. Temporarily disable your antivirus or firewall and check if the microphone works with third-party apps. If it does, you can adjust the settings to allow microphone access.
    7. **Test with a Different User Account**: Create a new user account on your laptop and test the microphone with third-party apps in that account. If it works fine in the new account, the issue may be related to your user profile, and you may need to troubleshoot further in your main account.

If the issue persists after trying these steps, there might be other underlying factors causing the problem. In that case, you can consider contacting HP support or seeking assistance from a qualified technician who can provide more personalized help and diagnose the specific issue with your laptop's microphone.

I hope this information is of use.

    Kind regards,

    Shantal.

You update drivers only via the HP Update utility and no other source
