When come back to computer, have error message about needing an internet connection...?

Hi.....Lately when I've been away from my PC for a couple hours or more, I come back to it and have an error message stating:

"You'll need the internet for this. It doesn't look like you're connected to the internet. Check your connection and try again. 0x800704cf"

And below this is a string of numbers and letters, which I guess may mean something. It also says the time and date when this error happened or when the message was sent, I'm not sure. There is also a link to "send feedback" and a "cancel" button to cancel out of the message.

I'm don't know what this message is even in reference to or what the computer is trying to do or access, considering I've been away from it for a while.

I go to check Network and I see my router isn't chosen. So it's using a hotspot I'm assuming. Not sure why this is now happening lately.

Has anyone ever seen this before or know what this is in reference to or how to fix this?

Thanks, Tina

    *UPDATE

    Hi John:

Well I have good news! I was looking online for further fixes to this error message issue I was having, and someone had mentioned Skype running in the background and that this sometimes causes issues, and to turn that off, and it fixed it for him. So I decided to completely uninstall it and wait and hope for the best. I also did the "netsh winsock reset catalog" fix as well.

So I'm not sure which one has helped things, but I'm no longer getting that error message. I honestly thought I was going to have to live with it.

Just wanted to update and provide further info for anyone else who reads this thread, since I know this is a frustrating error message for many.

    Thanks for your help!!

    Tina

    Hi John:

Well...I've tried all of the suggestions and unfortunately this 0x800704CF error message is still happening.

I haven't tried changing the DNS server as I wasn't sure how to do that, but I tried everything else we've talked about. This error message must really like my computer because it refuses to leave lol.

I turned my Wi-Fi off thinking that was the issue as I had that turned on for some reason, along with the PC being connected to ethernet, and I almost thought that was the solution as I hadn't seen the error message pop up for a while, but then checked later and it was there again. So that was disappointing.

I've seen some other "fixes" online but I'm not computer savvy enough or brave enough to go there. I'm afraid I'll delete something that I shouldn't or make a change that maybe I shouldn't have.

I really appreciate your advice and suggestions. I'm just not sure what else to do at this point.

    Thanks, Tina

    Hi John:

I tried your suggestion to remove the proxy server, Command Prompt and enter the netsh command, and unfortunately it still is happening.

Someone mentioned trying to clear the Microsoft Store's cache. Do you think that could help?

I haven't tried your last suggestion yet about disabling the Microsoft Network Connection.

I've seen many different suggestions online to fix this error message, and I'm wondering, is it okay to do all of these?.....Meaning, I worry that doing them could be needless as I don't really know what thing is causing this error message, and in turn it changes something or deletes something that didn't need to be changed or deleted.

Are these changes going to affect the overall big picture of my computer, even if the error message continues?

If I can't figure it out and have to live with this pop-up message, then so be it. Lol....

    Thanks, Tina

    Hi John:

Unfortunately, I received the error message again after being away from the computer for a while. Also, earlier I ended up doing the second suggestion you gave me regarding the Microsoft Store, choosing Repair.

Are there any other suggestions for this issue that you know of?

    Thanks,

    Tina

    Hi John:

Thanks for replying! I tried your advice and did the Network and Internet suggestion, and it showed everything was fine with my internet.

I want to be away from my PC longer to see if I get that error message again, but I was wondering, why would the issue be related to the Microsoft Store app? How could that be related?

    I will keep you updated!

    Thanks, Tina
