PC keeps restarting, especially during gaming, but not always.

Not a Windows 11 update related as this issue has been online. I thought it was from overheating or high loads, but sometimes it happens right after it restarts or just randomly while browsing Chrome/Edge with only a few tabs. It has been happening for a few years, but went quiet for a bit then started doing it again. It is more likely to occur while gaming, but not 100% of the time.

Some info:

  • Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-8700K CPU @ 3.70GHz 3.70 GHz, 32gb RAM
  • Upgrade PCU from 650w to 850w
  • New GPU from GTX 1080 to RTX 3060
  • Changed thermal paste on CPU
  • Monitor temps and CPU never reaches over 70oc and GPU never over 50oc
  • Mobo and CPU are 7 years old and haven't been replaced if it is a hardware problem
  • I tried finding something in event logs for a while and gave up (using filters ‘1074, 6006, 6008’ as suggested online)
  • installed BlueScreenView just now to help find the cause, didn't notice any updated files after the restart with the only file being one dated 3/04/2023

Error I noticed a few restarts ago is:

“The process C:\Windows\System32\RuntimeBroker.exe (NAME) has initiated the restart of computer CHRISTINE on behalf of user NAME\Name for the following reason: Other (Unplanned)

 Reason Code: 0x0

 Shut-down Type: restart”

I tried to replicate the restart and here is what I got:

What I did: playing D4 with windows and tabs opened. Noticed CPU temp around 70, would it be a possible spike that tripped the restart?

Event Viewer around time of restart and Minidump files

I'm not sure if the Minidup files are working as the date on the 'Date Modified' section says April

Thank you in advance!

The minidump indicates BSOD caused by the Nvidia driver and memory corruption.

Check for Windows updates. Settings(Win+I) > Windows update > Check for Windows update.

After installing the pending updates and restarting the computer, return to the exact Windows Update screen, click Advanced Options > Optional Updates, apply the optional updates, and restart the PC.

Update BIOS by visiting your computer support page website.

Disable any overclocking and XMP in the Bios settings.

Try using the free utility MemTest86. Download it and run a full 4-pass scan to test your RAM for physical errors.

https://www.memtest86.com/

Run the DirectX Diagnostic Tool

  1. Launch the Run command by using the Windows Key + R shortcut.
  2. Type dxdiag in the dialog box and press Enter. This will open the DirectX Diagnostic utility.

3Wait for the DirectX Diagnostic Tool to finish troubleshooting.

  1. Now, click on the Display tab in the window.
  2. Check the Notes section for any errors or conflicts.
  3. If you see an error in the section, download the DirectX Web Installer https://redirect.viglink.com/?format=go&jso... to re-install the required components.

Run SFC

  1. Open the Start menu and search for "Command Prompt" or "CMD."Right-click on it and select "Run as admin.
  2. Type each command below and wait until the scan is completed.

SFC /scannow

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Did the steps below and played for 2 days and no restarts!

    • Check for Windows updates. Settings(Win+I) > Windows update > Check for Windows update. No updates
    • After installing the pending updates and restarting the computer, return to the exact Windows Update screen, click Advanced Options > Optional Updates, apply the optional updates, and restart the PC. Two updates, one for HP printer and LG monitor. Installed. No issues
    • Update BIOS by visiting your computer support page website. Downloaded to USB flash drive and updated.
    • Disable any overclocking and XMP in the Bios settings. Everything was on ‘AUTO’ as I haven’t touched any overclocking settings.
    • Try using the free utility MemTest86. Download it and run a full 4-pass scan to test your RAM for physical errors. Done and received no errors.

I'll come back to this thread and try the 'DirectX Diagnostic Tool' and 'Run SFC' if the random restarts happen again.

Thank you so much for your help. I really appreciate the clear and detailed responses!

I’m sorry that you are experiencing this issue. The minidumps indicate BSOD caused by the Nvidia driver.

Please clean uninstall the Nvidia driver with the DDU tool.

Download and install the latest driver by visiting the below link.

    Hello,

Thank you! I have done the clean uninstall and downloaded the lastest Nvidia driver. I will do some tests now and see how it goes.
