Use external camera for Windows Hello on laptop when lid is closed

I have a LG Gram laptop that most often is connected to a dock/hub connected to dual monitors and various peripherals, including a Logitech Brio 4K camera, which I bought specifically to use to sign in with Windows Hello facial recognition. The laptop lid is closed when connected to the dock. Until recently, Windows Hello worked well using the Brio in this setup. Recently, it has only worked at Windows startup from a restart, and doesn't work to sign back in when Windows is locked. If the built-in LG IR camera is disabled in Device Manager, then the Brio works; but then when the laptop is removed from the dock and the lid opened, facial recognition doesn't work with the built-in camera and reports it couldn't turn the camera on. Edit: The Brio has stopped working, even with the built-in LG IR camera disabled. Hello fails and Windows says it couldn't turn on the camera.

System Info: LG Gram 17 with Windows 11 Pro 22H2 build 22621.2134, up to date per Windows Update (last update was Cumulative Update for Windows 11, KB5029263, and Cumulative Update for .NET Framework, KB5028948, both installed 8/11/2023)

How can I make Windows support both cameras?

    I'm confused by your instructions.

    1. Connect your Logitech camera to your laptop.

As stated, the camera is connected to a dock/hub that I use with the laptop when I need the Logitech camera. Are you suggesting I change that?

    1. Open the Windows Settings app by pressing the Windows key + I.
    2. Click on "Accounts" and then click on "Sign-in options" in the left-hand menu.
    3. Scroll down to the "Windows Hello" section and click on "Set up" under "Face recognition" or "Fingerprint".
    4. Follow the on-screen instructions to set up Windows Hello using your laptop camera.

In the "Ways to sign in" section, under Facial recognition (Windows Hello), there is no option to click on "Set up" because facial recognition is already set up. I clicked on "Improve recognition" with the laptop lid open and connected to the dock/hub, and went through the process with the laptop camera.

    1. Once you have set up Windows Hello, close the lid of your laptop.
    2. Right-click on the Windows desktop and select "Display settings".
    3. Scroll down to the "Multiple displays" section and click on "Extend desktop".

The option in the top box is already set to "Extend these displays".

    1. Drag the Logitech camera window to the external display.

What is the "Logitech camera window"? Any open window will be on the external display with the laptop lid closed.

    1. Open the Windows Camera app and select the Logitech camera as the default camera.

I don't see a setting for default camera in the Windows Camera app. When I open it, the camera app uses the Logitech camera.

    1. When you open your laptop lid, Windows Hello will automatically switch to using your laptop camera. When you close your laptop lid, the Logitech camera will become the default camera for the Windows Camera app.

Let me know if this works so I can look for other options if this doesn't work.

With the laptop and the Logitech camera still connected to the dock, I did the "Improve recognition" process with the laptop camera and then closed the laptop lid. Windows Hello still tries to use the laptop camera, not the Logitech camera.

    Hello!

    One possible way could be:

    1. Connect your Logitech camera to your laptop.
    2. Open the Windows Settings app by pressing the Windows key + I.
    3. Click on "Accounts" and then click on "Sign-in options" in the left-hand menu.
    4. Scroll down to the "Windows Hello" section and click on "Set up" under "Face recognition" or "Fingerprint".
    5. Follow the on-screen instructions to set up Windows Hello using your laptop camera.
    6. Once you have set up Windows Hello, close the lid of your laptop.
    7. Right-click on the Windows desktop and select "Display settings".
    8. Scroll down to the "Multiple displays" section and click on "Extend desktop".
    9. Drag the Logitech camera window to the external display.
    10. Open the Windows Camera app and select the Logitech camera as the default camera.
    11. When you open your laptop lid, Windows Hello will automatically switch to using your laptop camera. When you close your laptop lid, the Logitech camera will become the default camera for the Windows Camera app.

Let me know if this works so I can look for other options if this doesn't work.

    Hello again,

I'm sorry for the confusion. Please try connecting the camera directly to your laptop to see if the issue persists. You can try to download the Logitech BRIO for Windows Hello installer and see if that helps with your problem.

    Let me know this goes.

As far as I can tell, Logitech does not provide any downloadable driver for this camera, and says that Windows will install the correct drivers automatically. Windows says the driver is correct, and there are no updates available with Windows Update. Here is the driver info:

I don't know about the BIOS setting and I can't check right now. From working in the BIOS before, I don't recall any camera settings, but I haven't specifically looked for them either. I'll try to look later tonight or tomorrow. Edit: I did not find any camera options in BIOS.

Did you install the correct driver for the external camera?

Is there any options are available in bios to set the primary camera after connecting external camera.
