Secondary Montior Artifacting/Lagging when Application in Fullscreen on Primary

Hello everyone,

I have an issue with my secondary Monitor showing massive artifacts and the whole system lagging for the duration the artifacts are on screen. Those artifacts only appear when a fullscreen application is running on the primary display (Games, Video) and the secondary monitor is in focus. GPU usage does not matter. So far I have found out that this issue does not happen if I drive both monitors with the same refresh rate. Unfortunately this is not a solution to me since I would like to use the whole 240hz of my primary screen while my secondary can only do 144hz.

I have also noted occasional micro-stutters in games when something on the secondary monitor is happening like Spotify changing song or Videos playing.

Video showing the issue: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=27pCyLxYLsc
The issue is pretty tame in the video, sometimes it goes completely crazy.

The artifacts do not show when recording a Video on OS Level with OBS or the AMD Software.

I have pretty much tried everything that came to my mind with no effects whatsoever so i'm getting kinda desperate here:

  • Changed Monitor PSU
  • Changed DP Cable
  • Tried HDMI @ 60Hz
  • Switched Ports on GPU
  • Cleaned and reseated GPU
  • Tried a different GPU (also 6900XT)
  • Removed GPU drivers with DDU and reinstalled
  • Tried old Drivers, one from April this year and one from the end of last year
  • Disable Freesync
  • Changed various Windows Settings (Game Mode, Windowed Optimizations, VRR)
  • Tested SSD, RAM and VRAM

    Hi Chandy,

What about this artifacting? Here are my details. Look near the search bar at the top.

I recently started to have artifacting on my dual monitor setup as well. It's a new PC, about 7mos old and had them change out the GPU figuring that's what it was and it was under warranty so why not... Well, it's still doing it.

I am not a "PC guy". I have enough knowledge to follow other ppl's instructions but I do not know anything on my own.

I've changed out the HDMI and Display port cables leading to the monitors but it definitely seems to only happen on one the monitors regardless if it is set as the primary or secondary monitor. Look at the top near the search bar. Can this be a "bad" monitor? Although I never saw it happen with my old PC.

    I'm using a PowerSpec PC

the GPU is a GeForcec RTX 4070

If you tell me other spec info you need and how to get it, I will. Again, I am not a PC guy. The box for the GPU is sitting in front of me, that's why I was able to get you that info.

    Thanks!

Maybe you can try to reproduce your previous operations in the screen recording state, which is used to identify the problem from the hardware itself or the system itself. You can try to use a reputable screen recording software, and then share the recorded video with me, which will help us observe how the problem continues.

If you don't see any artifacts in the recorded screen video, your current system is fine. And you're doing quite a bit, for which this should be an additional test method to help you see where the problem is coming from.

Feel free to let me know if you got any further updates, thanks.

    Hi Chandy,

thank you for the fast and in-depth response.

The 2 posts on the AMD forums unfortunately did not get me further in solving this issue. The general performance from my card is as it should be and power options are all fine. Also no issue with overheating, temps are completely fine. Drivers have also bee reinstalled after wiping them with DDU before.

My GPU hardware also is definetly not defective as I have also tried a different GPU (different 6900XT model) and experienced the same issues with that one.

I have tried a different monitor and I also get the same outcome with it. Artifacts appear if application is on fullscreen on primary screen and i switch to the secondary screen if both monitors use different refresh rates.

    Best regards,
    Neko

    Hello,TheLunaticNeko

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

It looks like you've done quite a bit of troubleshooting. The issue you're experiencing may be related to a few different factors, which I've searched and tested. The following is a discussion from the AMD community on similar issues:

Solved: XFX Radeon RX 6900XT MERC319 BLACK Bad Performanc... - AMD Community

How to determine what is causing visual artifacts - AMD Community

Watch out for ads on the site that may advertise products frequently classified as PUP (Potentially Unwanted Products). Thoroughly research any product advertised on the site before you decide to download and install it.

Judging from the current situation, your graphics card is working fine at low frame rates, which should indicate that the hardware itself of your GPU is of good quality.

For this please make sure that the current GPU is not performing any overclocking in the BIOS, if so, adjust it to the default settings (including any fan curves and frequency settings of the GPU), and ensure that your GPU's cooling system is running correctly. Excessive heat can also cause problems if you've done something like this. Then the next step we need to start troubleshooting from the display itself, for which you can perform a cross test. Right now:

    1. With the current 6900XT plugged into other monitors, this is a cross test, apart from your current two monitors. Use someone else's monitor to see how the problem manifests. Or you can try using just one monitor and see how the problem manifests itself.
    2. If other monitors behave normally, it may be a hardware defect of the monitor itself, and hardware repair should be considered at this time. But if other monitors don't work as well, you need to consider the current GPU hardware defect. At this point you should try to take the GPU to XFX's repair department for a cross test and see how it behaves.

Feel free to let me know if you got any further updates, thanks.
