How to set up home network Windows 10

I've had difficulty over a long period setting up a simple home network for 2 computers that are connected to the same wifi modem. I followed the instructions at

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/how-do-i-connect-two-2-desktop-windows-10-pcs-to/d20132fc-dc2e-4582-a13e-3b2d51481c20 but that did not seem to help. In File Explorer, I can see the other computer, but cannot access any drives or files. This is the error message -- how do I get around this?

    Hi , Lindsay.

I am Ivan, I will help you with this.

Go to the start menu > settings > network and internet > ethernet or wifi network > select Private mode.

Then go back to the previous menu and select advanced network settings > advanced sharing settings.

    Mark

    network discovery

    File and printer sharing.

In the Tab all networks Check

    Share public folders.

    Uncheck Password protected sharing.

You configure the two computers according to the above procedure.

Then Access the control panel, go to the Account and Users tab > Credential Manager > Windows Credential.

Look for any Credentials on both computers.

Thank you once again, Ivan, for your help. Unfortunately, we do not seem to be making much progress, and I'm getting more and more confused about why it is so difficult to accomplish what should be a relatively simple task.

And I do not understand your second para -- what 'first option'? what is an 'online account'? yes, I am trying to share the entire disk drive and yes, I do get the same permission error -- but why is that happening? what is causing it?

Nor do I understand your second para -- I only want to share Dell2 drives C, D, E and F, and PFG drives C, E and F and I've entered permissions for those drives only. So why has Users appeared and what is it?

I do seem to be able to access Network/PFG/Users/Public from DELL2 -- there are 7 folders there and they are all empty. But suddenly, I cannot access any drive in DELL2 from PFG -- when I click on Network/DELL2 from PFG, I get the same Network error as at the very top of this thread. I've checked again that I've fully shared all DELL2 drives. What on earth is happening?

If Users is where Microsoft puts its default folders, I deliberately do not use them at all. I prefer to put my files where I want them, not where Microsoft seems to think I should put them.

Are you (or anyone else) able to point me to somewhere where home networking on Windows 10 is explained in some detail?

    Hi , Lindsay

I'm sorry I meant that user public and why we enabled the option

In the Tab all networks Check

    Share public folders.

These folders have everyone active permission on security thus giving permission for anyone to access.

Now as and are partitions in this case you will have the password protection option active.

Are you using a microsoft account on both computers or a local account because it will ask for credentials.

If online, I recommend creating a local account with administrator permissions.

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/cre...

Through the link above you can create a local account, remembering that this account must have administrator access with a password.

The password protection option must be activated.

Then you have to go to the sharing tab of the units you selected and put the local account you created with permission as in the image below.

This has to be done on both computers.

Ivan, I appreciate your help. However, may I suggest that it really helps enquirers if you provide a step-by-step explanation using the correct headings and labels.

I had already done what you suggested in Settings as set out in the link I provided in my original question -- where I have to say the explanations were much clearer than yours.

Then I went to Control Panel > User Accounts [not Account and Users tab] > Credential Manager > Manage Window Credentials as you suggested. You said "Look for any Credentials on both computers" -- yes, I've found them, but what do I do now??

The snip below is what is shown for one computer under Windows Credentials -- do I Remove this or Edit it or what?

And can someone tell me where I can find a clear explanation of Windows Credentials -- I found plenty of references to them on this website, but no explanation of their purpose or how they should or should not be used. Thank you.

    Hi , Lindsay

I am Ivan, I will help you with this.

Right the first option if you are using an online account and as you are sharing the entire disk drive in this case the same permission error.

Already the users unit is appearing because it has released access to the public folder that is in C:\Users\Public that access is fully released due to having given permission through the option that I informed earlier.

Can you access the public folder on the Users drive of each computer or does it also give an error?
