media player not working

Following an update of Windows my media player is not working. I need to copy my CD's into my library and then they can be used on my Sonos system. This is also important for my business which requires me to listen to CD's I have for sale to be reviewed. It worked fine until an update I have tried nearly every single option available to me include the dreaded revert to previous version which lost a lot of setting I relied on for other things. seriously, there has to be a simple answer to thsi one. Take off whatever update affected this and replace it with a patch which makes it work again. I pay for Office and expect it to work. Windows are not in control of my hardware and its duties. (Law suit should be applied here) telling me my drive is dirty CD is cracked or scratched NO!!!! It worked fine until outside interference made it not so.

So to conclude. I want Microsoft to fix this problem with a straight out fix that doesn't mask itself in all the other nonsense, dirty CD's indeed,, just fix what you made go wrong and own up to it.

    Hi Andrew,

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

I'm Hahn and I'm here to help you with your concern.

I'm sorry to hear that your media player is not working after the update. I know how frustrating that can be, especially when you need to copy your CD's and listen to them on your Sonos system. I hope I can help you with some possible solutions.

One of the common causes of Windows Media Player errors is the lack of proper codecs on your PC. Codecs are software components that enable your PC to play different types of media files. You may need to install or update the codecs that are compatible with your media player and the CD's you want to copy.

Another possible cause of Windows Media Player errors is the conflict between the latest update and the previous configuration of your PC. You can try to use System Restore to revert your PC to a state before the update that caused the problem. System Restore is a feature that allows you to undo changes that might have affected your PC's performance or stability. To use System Restore, you can follow these steps:

    • Search “create a restore point” in the Windows Search box.
    • Find the matched search result and open it.
    • In the default System Protection tab of the new popup, click System Restore.
    • Follow the instruction to choose the latest restore point right before the Windows Media Player update issue to restore to your PC.
    • Then, carry out the restoration.

Check for Driver Updates: Sometimes, updates can affect drivers. Make sure that your CD/DVD drive's drivers are up to date. You can usually find the latest drivers on the manufacturer's website.

Reinstall or Update Media Player: If the media player is not working properly, try reinstalling it or updating it to the latest version. This might help resolve any compatibility issues with the recent Windows update.

If some Windows functions aren't working or Windows crashes, use the System File Checker to scan Windows and restore your files. Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files - Microsoft Support

Third-Party Media Player: While it's not an ideal solution, you could also consider using a third-party media player to rip your CDs and manage your audio library.

    Hi Andrew,

You're absolutely right, I apologize for not fully acknowledging the core issue here. Since a Windows update directly caused your CD drive to stop working properly with your media player software, no amount of troubleshooting or workarounds on your end will fix it.

Thank you for your feedback. I have submitted this issue for you through internal channels. In addition, you can also submit your problem through the Feedback Hub (if convenient, please provide as much detail as possible, including pictures, repro videos, etc.).

Send feedback to Microsoft with the Feedback Hub app - Microsoft Support

Please share the feedback link after submitting, I will submit your feedback to the relevant team for investigation through internal channels.

In the short term, you may need to explore alternative media player and CD ripping software that can fulfill your requirements.

I understand your frustration, and I hope you find a satisfactory solution to your problem soon.

    Your Sincerely

AS I have already mentioned I did a system restore and I am still having to work out which programmes it disrupted en route to this. As I have stated before using my car analogy. If you buy a new car and one wheel is faulty and upon return to the dealership takes it off and says it will be fine on three you know there is a problem. the problem is not the owner

All of the answers are of a long winded nature and although I have followed them all they are not the answer. The answer is to provide a fix to the fix. If you are incapable of doing this please also tell me at least I would get some piece of mind knowing I will have to look for alternative "decent" software to perfomr this simple task.

    thank you

    Hi Andrew

I understand your frustration with the situation, and I empathize with your desire for a straightforward fix to the issue caused by a Windows update. It can be frustrating when software updates introduce problems rather than improvements.

Since you've already tried various troubleshooting steps and system restore didn't work due to the date limitation. In such cases, here are some additional steps you can consider:

Disclaimer: Let’s try performing an in-place install or in-place upgrade which will refresh your Windows files and operating system without removing files or applications. That being said, we always recommend that if you have important data, you should back it up before making large system changes. If you want to back up your data first, please do so.

Provide feedback through the Windows Feedback Hub. Microsoft values user feedback, and your input could help them identify and address the issue in future updates. Send feedback to Microsoft with the Feedback Hub app - Microsoft Support

Please share the feedback link after submitting, I will submit your feedback to the relevant team for investigation through internal channels.

Have aready done a system restore and this did not work as the date was not far enough back. I fear doing this again because the last time I spent nigh on a day reinstalling everything that had been lost. Yes it happens try it sometime. reinstalled media player and have up to date Codecs all of this along with maybe your CD is diry are the wrong answers. The media player will play files I already have int eh library so this is not corrupted. What we then come down to is the fact an update has made this happen and what the actual required fix is to be should be addressed as we need an update to fix the update. My laptop makers are blaming this also. Please let me know how you run a car with no tyres? because this si what the system is now doing to me. I cannot play music and save it it which I then sell I cannot record thigs etc

    Please advise

    Andrew
