Error 0x80242016 During Windows Update - Nothing Works

Hello - I have an HP laptop that I hadn't used in about 2 years so it missed all the updates. When I tried to use it again and update it says "Your device has reached the end of service".

After confirming that it meets the requirements to update to the most recent version of Windows 10, I kept getting error 0x80242016 so I looked up and performed some solutions from online but continue to get the same error. I've tried the following things:

  1. Reboot windows and initiate the update process again
  2. Reset windows update to fix 0x80242016
  3. Disable windows search service
  4. Run DISM along with system file checker
  5. Make use of windows update troubleshooter to fix 0x80242016

Now, I'd like to just reinstall Windows, hoping that will fix the error and update to the most recent version. How can I do that easily?

    Hi DeeCee,

The setup seems to have progressed well, but it got stuck when migrating the driver packages. The error mentioned in the screenshot is usually caused by corrupt driver packages. It can be fixed (see here, for example).

Please share your setup logs on OneDrive.

    • Open the "C:$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources" folder.

    • Select the two folders, "Panther" and "Rollback" (if available).

    • Right-click on the selection, click Send To → Compressed (zipped) folder. It offers to create a Zip folder on the desktop. Click Yes.

    • Upload the zip file to OneDrive/Dropbox/WeTransfer.

Also, share the following log file.

    • SetupApi.Dev.log: c:\windows\inf\setupapi.dev.log

Hi Ramesh - I ended up replacing all the outdated drivers using Driver Easy and then re-ran the Media Creation Tool, keeping just my personal files and not the settings, and it worked! I am now updated to the most current version of Windows 10 and will never let the updates get so behind again. I thank you for all your help - have a great day!

    Hi DeeCee,

0x80242016 is a Windows Update client error.

0x80242016 WU_E_UH_POSTREBOOTUNEXPECTEDSTATE The state of the update after its post-reboot operation has completed is unexpected.

Rather than fixing Windows Update, you may get the Windows 10 22H2 ISO and do an in-place upgrade to 22H2.

Please see the method I posted in this link:

Hello again, Ramesh - should I do the fix before sharing the setup logs? I appreciate your patience - I've never tried making these kind of changes before.

Hi Ramesh - I followed the steps on the link you gave me and first tried keeping my personal files and apps and got the message below and then I said delete everything and still got this message. Do you know what this means?
