How can I choose which account I want to log on at the startup screen

So on my PC there are two accounts. Local accounts, not Microsoft accounts, if that makes any difference. Mine with a password with admin rights and my wife's which is a guest account with no password.

What I want is to be able to remove my password but at the startup screen be able to choose in which account we want to sign in. By default it signs us in at the last account that was used before the PC shut down.

Please advise giving details like you would to a 5 year-old.

Thanks a lot in advance!!

    Hello. This is Emily

Type netplwiz in the search on the taskbar and hit enter to launch Account. select your user, if the "user must enter a username and password to use this computer" box is NOT checked, please check it , click Apply. Then uncheck the box and click Apply. This will bring up a pop up window.

On this pop up window, very important, erase the username that's prefilled. Username should be your entire local user’s username. Password is your account's password. Any typo here can prevent it from working. Then click OK. And back to the netplwiz page, click OK.

Restart the computer now and see if it works without prompting you for password.

    Hi Emily!

Thanks you for replying so fast!

The "user must enter a username and password to use this computer" box was checked so I unchecked it and hit Apply.

On the pop up window I erased my username (which was correct btw) and typed it again, as well as my password.

When restarting the PC, it indeed didn't need a password but there was no screen for me to choose the user I wanted to log on to. Instead it just logged into my account again.

Do you think I did something wrong?

    Maybe I have misunderstood you.

Do you mind telling me how you currently switch users between yours and your wife's? On the sign in page, do you see your wife's on the lower left? Or do you have to click on Switch Users for hers to show?

Currently, on the startup screen, I am asked for my password (cause I was the last user on here) and on the bottom left I see both accounts' names.

I want to remove my password though and ideally be asked on which account we want to log on to when booting the PC, instead of just logging in to whichever account was last used.

So, you prefer not having to click on the other user on the lower left to sign in, is that right? If that's the case, we can try to disable fast user switching to see if it works, but I want to be transparent with you.. that's going backwards. Windows introduced the fast user switching to allow computer to boot faster. In case you want to read further, you can find it here: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/win32...

As an alternative, you can do the same for your wife's account in netplwiz so it won't require password. That way, you can click on her account on the lower left to sign in without needing to key in password. This way it won't sacrifice the user profile load time.

But if you still prefer disabling fast user switch, you can this tutorial here: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/95383-enabl... I will recommend using Option 2.
