Maybe a clarification on my post.
The "Apple Mobile Device USB Driver" does not appear to be something you can download on it's own (I couldn't find it). So if you happen to have already installed it because it came with other software then maybe all is OK. If you haven't had this driver installed as a result of installing other software OR uninstalled the package it was part of OR upgraded the package which now no longer includes it then problems arise.
I do not have a list of apple software that includes the driver except for the one particular case that applies to me.
I have installed a legacy Version 12.10.11.2 of iTunes and that works for me because it seems iTunes contains this driver as part of it's install. Newer versions of iTunes may not work. It is a while ago now but I think the reason I installed the old version was because my iTunes got upgraded and my phone was no longer recognised by Windows plus I do use iTunes to copy information between apps on my phone and windows PC and this legacy version is the last one that still does this. Maybe Apple have fixed this already OR maybe not.
The easiest solution would be to download just the driver and install it but perhaps there are reasons Apple doesn't want to allow it and require you to install something as large as iTunes. Choose one of the following:
a) They want you to have to agree to an EULA to make you promise something like you won't try and reverse engineer the protocol
b) Having software like iTunes on your PC gives them some advantage like trying to persuade you to make iTunes your media and audio player so they can advertise to you.
c) Someone at Apple has PC installs as part of their KPI's for Bounses. $$$
d) All of the above
For those who haven't given up all hope already
