Steam Games not Launching after installing new hard drive

I have a Lenovo Flex 5 Laptop that I bought used back in March of this year. From about then to July, it was working fine and I could run games very easily without stress.

Well in July, my hard drive started acting funky and wouldn't load when I would turn on my computer. Fast forward to a week ago where I ordered the Crucial P5 Plus 1TB Hard Drive and my friend installed it.

I started using it the other day and noticed my games were not loading at all. They would pop up and then close immediately. Steam would tell me they are running when they weren't.

I saw online that this may have to do with windows defender or any other antivirus softwares, but I'm not sure that is the problem. My computer/hard drive would be able to handle this. I don't mind trying anything at this point.

    Hi Joseph,

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

I'm Hahn and I'm here to help you with your concern.

If your Steam games are not launching after installing a new hard drive, there could be several reasons for this issue. Let's go through some troubleshooting steps to help you resolve the problem:

    1. Verify Game Files:
      • Open Steam and go to your game library.
      • Right-click on the game that's not launching, then select "Properties."
      • Go to the "Local Files" tab and click "Verify Integrity of Game Files."
      • Steam will check and repair any corrupted or missing game files.
    2. Run as Administrator:
      • Right-click on the game's executable file (usually found in the game's installation folder) and choose "Run as Administrator." This can sometimes resolve permission-related issues.
    3. Compatibility Mode:
      • Right-click the game's executable, go to "Properties," and under the "Compatibility" tab, try running the game in compatibility mode for an older version of Windows.
    4. Update Graphics Drivers:
      • Outdated graphics drivers can sometimes cause game launch issues. Update your GPU drivers to the latest version from the manufacturer's website.
    5. Disable Antivirus/Firewall:
      • Temporarily disable your antivirus and Windows Defender to see if they are causing the problem. If the game works after disabling them, you can try adding exceptions for your games.

Disclaimer: Temporarily turn off real-time Microsoft Defender antivirus protection in Windows Security. However, keep in mind that if you do so, your device may be vulnerable to threats. So please turn it on immediately once issue fixed.

    1. Check Event Viewer:
      • Check the Windows Event Viewer for any error messages related to the games. This may provide more information about what's causing the issue.
    2. Background Applications:
      • Ensure no other background applications or processes are conflicting with the game. Close unnecessary applications and processes before running the game.

A "clean boot" starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs, so that you can determine whether a background program is interfering with your game or program. How to perform a clean boot in Windows - Microsoft Support

If none of the above steps resolve the issue, you may want to contact Steam Support for further assistance. They can provide more specific guidance based on the games you're trying to play and your system configuration.

I hope this helps.  If there is anything not clear, please do not hesitate to let me know.

    Your Sincerely
