Why do I need to restart every time I plug in Realtek Audio Headphones

Using a currently updated version of Windows 11 on a laptop I need to restart every time I plug in the headphones even if I unplug them and plug them back in within a couple minutes. When plugged in the troubleshooter says "The device does not appear to be plugged in". All is well the first time after I do a restart.

How do I permanently resolve this issue?

After following the steps now the headphones don't work before or after restarts. And my speakers don't work at all. My speaker is on mute with an X. The troubleshooter can't find or fix either of these problems. I have restarted my computer multiple times.

I have Dell Premium support. I just spent one hour with them fixing the problems. Not as simple as it seemed and not really Dell issues. Thank you for trying.

    Hello BarbBGB,

    I am Jaspreet Singh.

An issue with your device audio drivers may be the reason.

    Try these steps please :

Make sure your device has internet connectivity

right click on start button and click on device manager.

click on sound video and game controllers

then right click on your audio driver (it my be named Realtek or other depending on your device configuration)

    click on uninstall device

reboot your device and let the driver install again by opening device manager then right clicking on the device of which the driver was removed.

    Click on update driver.

Let the search complete and if it says the best driver is already installed choose the option to look for the driver in windows update.

When the windows update page opens click on check for updates and let the driver install from there.
