Hi,

How can I completely get rid of Microsoft, all email and Windows OS and not give my money to big tech corporations? I'm tired of Microsoft and Google tracking me.

Please suggest any alternatives.

Web browsing activity is always tracked, though the quantity and depth to which this occurs depends on the specific browser, search engine and other software you use for that purpose.

I've reduced the amount of tracking that Micrsoft does both by using the privacy settings in Windows and the Edge browser, as well as selecting the DuckDuckGo search engine in Edge, which is known for doping less tracking than the major engines. I really only chose to drop the Bing search engine myself when they started advertising their Rewards and pushing their shopping and similar features in Bing, which annoyed me enough to make me try DuckDuckGo to stop the useless noise this created.

Some others prefer to use the ad blocker extensions in their browsers to block the often-creepy targeted advertising that results from trac king, but I found that the relatively extreme privacy settings I made in Edge itself results in certain aggressive websites displaying messages that I needed to turn off my ad blocker, so I don't personally see the need for these.

Since I also do a portion of my web browsing from my phone, I'd need to use an alternate browser there as well if I wanted to suppress this completely, but I've chosen the Microsoft Edge browser there as well, since I can configure this well enough to stop the most abusive tracking done by Google's Chrome, while still keeping the security, sync and other features that make my browsing in both places more secure and easier to maintain.

Switching to Linux is an easy way to walk away from the ad-centric world of Microsoft and Google, but that also means you won't have some of these more useful features available when you want them. As someone who worked 40 years in the computing field, the last half as a security professional and much of it with Microsoft products, I still prefer to use these, it's just the annoying targeted advertising and excessive tracking that requires some less intuitive configuration to make it slightly less creepy and abusive for my own purposes.

Change your default search engine in Microsoft Edge - Microsoft Support

You'll find that by switching to Linux, you'll need to find replacements for any Windows or 3rd-party apps that you use that support this other platform, while by simply learning the Microsoft settings in Windows and Edge, you can remove many of the more annoying aspects of tracking and thus advertising, while still taking advantage of the truly useful features that Microsoft provides. Linux really means starting over from scratch.

Also remember that though you get rid of Microsoft's tracking, you'll lose the free access to Microsoft's email and Office apps that comes with a Microsoft Account, so you'll need to replace that with some 3rd-party service(s) that though they may not cost money, typically have either their own tracking or other methods of extracting that value from you as well.

I personally have always had a paid version of Microsoft's online email account at $19.95/year that was ad-free, but I was notified just a few days ago that this will be switched to a Microsoft 365 Basic subscription that includes the features displayed in the following document.

Upgrade to Outlook with Microsoft 365 | Microsoft 365

The fully free version that comes with the account itself is listed in the left-hand column as well, so you can compare them. I'll be keeping the paid Basic option, since it's not only still ad-free, but now officially contains not only the web-based office apps that I could previously only get through Outlook.com, but also 100GB OneDrive storage as well, which before was a separate offering,

Hi, I am Dave, I will help you with this.

if you do not want to run Windows on your PC, then you could install a version of the Linux operating system on your PC, it is a free alternative operating system, but it is not as user friendly and you may have device driver issues in that operating system.

If you choose to use the Internet (and especially social media), you should accept the fact that nothing is ever totally safe and nothing is ever totally private.

Thanks a lot for your reply.

Even though it is not user friendly and I'll have device driver issues , I will be free right? Like no tracking ? No collecting data ?
