Low resolution in some apps / part of some apps when not in use

I'm having problems with my Windows 11 Laptop where some GUI gets rendered with a very low resolution unless I make it "re-render" by moving my mouse cursor over it.

I wish I could attach some screenshots but as I upload them the text field bugs out and I cannot write anymore.

With the "new" MS Teams for example, the entire app goes to a lower resolution while on other apps, only one part that is probably rendered differently form the rest (content on the main window of the app vs toolbars). Other apps like Firefox, MS Teams Classic, Edge, Outlook and file explorer have no problem at all.

I have 2 external monitors attached through a usb hub but the problem remains even when I use only the laptop screen

My configuration:

Lenovo ThinkPad E15 Gen4
CPU: i7-1255U with Xe Graphics

GPU: GeForce MX550

RAM: 2x8GB 3200MHz

Windows: Win11 Pro 22H2

What I tried:

  • Updating graphics drivers and looking for updates
  • Switching between graphics card (iGPU vs GPU)

Thank you in advance,

Samuel

    Hi Samuel,

Farid here, An Independent advisor. I will be happy to assist you today.

A lot of apps were created years ago when 4k monitor is not popular at that time, so they don't fit the high resolution and will display blur due to the zoom in effect. Especially for the installer( installer is actually an app too ), though a lot of new apps are created, many of them still use old installer for packaging and delivery. That's why the letters look ugly and blur, they are scratched in fact.

In order to fix this, you could try these steps:

    1. Right click on the desktop - "Display settings"
    2. Below the text "Change the size of text, apps, and other items", set to "100%"

This setting may cause the text in some apps to seem very small but will appear with a clear edge.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let me know how it goes. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

This is unfortunately a developer issue where the engineers have probably chosen not to optimize their app interfaces for such high resolutions. Reasons can include, additional engineering required to do it, likely uses more resources, ubiquity of 4k deployments is not there to justify the cost.

In such cases, its best the user lowers their screen resolution to justify it.

What you can also do as a user is contact the developer and let them know about the deficiency in their app installers and interfaces. Microsoft of course being a first party developer will optimize many of their applications for such resolutions.

I'm having this issue too but it's only when the PC has been to sleep. All other apps are fine but New MS Teams is huge and blurry and closing and opening it again doesn't change anything. General display setting is 100% for fonts. If the PC hasn't been to sleep, Teams displays just fine.

    Okay thanks.

It's strange because as I said my screen is 1080p (1920x1080p) which is far from 4k.

That means that the MS Teams developers optimized it for 4k and not for 1080p? Because if it's the opposite it should run well on mine since I'm at 1080p
