<100 Mbps on Gig network - Fixed?

I just upgraded to a new Windows 11 PC. Reused the same ethernet cable, but only got about 50 Mbps, where my Win10 got about 800. My PC is plugged into a dumb gig switch. The switch is plugged into one of the 4 ports on my Google Fiber router. I also have a Synology NAS with two NICS. The primary NIC is plugged into a second port on the Google Router. The secondary NIC (for redundancy, not aggregating) is plugged into the same switch as my PC. This has worked for years on my Win10 PC, but appears to create a loop with my Win11 PC. When I unplug the second NIC, my speed goes from 50 Mbps to 850. Why? If there's a security issue, shouldn't it stop it completely? What does Win11 do differently that it doesn't like the connection? My new NIC is a 2.5 gig NIC, but everything else is gigabit and the link indicates it's a gig link? Is the faster NIC just flooding the network and if so, why doesn't it effect the whole network?

Hello , sorry about your problems. My name is Marco and I will do my best to help you.

That might be related to improper Speed and Duplex settings or an outdated network adapter driver. Windows 11 might handle these settings differently than Windows 10, causing the slower speed when the second NIC is connected.

    • First, try changing the Speed and Duplex settings of your network adapter to match your bandwidth. To do this, follow these steps:

Open the Settings window, and select Network & Internet.

Click on Advanced network settings > More network adapter options.

Right-click on your network adapter and select Properties.

    Select "Client for Microsoft Network"

Click on Configure, and then switch to the Advanced tab in the Properties window.

Select the Speed & Duplex option from the Property drop-down menu.

And on the right, under value, you can change the speed.

-Check if you have the lastest driverfor your network cards.

I did attempt this, however, even though I have tried every speed listed, my computer refuses to go above 100mbps. In properties, even though I have it set to 1.0 GBPS or 2.5, it will still say that it is receiving 100/100 mbps. I have plugged in other devices to the same ethernet cable and they all receive the speeds that they should be. My computer is the only one that refuses to uncap itself from 100mbps. Is there a resolution to this?

This recently started happening to me. Exactly this. I am on a gigabit xfinity connection and my link speed won't go above 100 Mbps. My computer has worked fine for over a year. I tried Speed and Duplex and surprisingly, it worked yesterday for a while. Then the link speed went to 100 on it's own mid use of the PC. Now, every time I changed it, it doesn't care. It stays at 100. If I use my phone or test another device, they get full speed on a speed test. It's this machine. It's either windows 11, my NIC, or the driver but my driver worked fine too for an entire year.

Maybe this is a problem with a recent patch? I ran patches a few weeks ago I think.

Oh - I also upgraded to an RTX 4080. So I did make a hardware change.

It's unlikely that you're flooding the network with a loop. Instead, the auto-negotiation process might not be working optimally with your new 2.5 Gbps NIC, causing the slower speed when the second NIC is connected.

You are brilliant. My speed and duplex was set to AutoNegotiate. I set it to 1 gig, plugged my NAS 2 NIC in and my speeds are fine.

Now, my question is, and I supposed I could try setting it to 2.5 and find out, but I'm afraid of blowing something up, was in auto negotiating a 100 MB connection, which is what it looked like from the test OR was it negotiating a 2.5 Gig connection and flooding the network with the loop, in which case, I'm still flooding the network, just not as much.

I DID try setting it to 2.5 Gig and my speed stayed good, so I guess I'm not flooding it with packets. Odd that it negotiated such a slow speed. Sounds like my lawyer.
