Hello John David A,
Welcome to Microsoft Community.
Please confirm, is this problem only in Google Chrome? Does the same problem occur in other applications that can play sound?
If this problem is only in Google Chrome, then the problem is most likely due to the fact that Google Chrome audio output devices are different from other applications.
If you are using Windows 10, please go to Start menu -- Settings -- System -- sound, open App volume and device preferences in Advanced sound options. Here you will see the input and output devices used by each application, make sure that Google Chrome and other applications use different output devices.
That should be the problem.
