Hello Michael,
I am Jaspreet Singh.
Since it is the OS drive you will sadly need to make a backup then install the OS on new drive and restore it or use a cloning software like macrium or easus.
You cannot copy the files to other drive and back.

Very novice tech person with a very noob question, I have recently purchased a new 2 tb SSD to replace my current 500 gb C drive. My D is a 1 tb and houses most of my program files, while the c houses the system and some other smaller programs and files. My question is can i simply move all my files from the C drive to the D without having to clone any software or do I have to follow the usual hard drive replacement procedure steps and backup the OS and all the other stuff. Thanks!
