Upgrade Windows 10 1903 to Windows 10 22H2

Hello all,

I haven't used my old laptop (Dell Inspiron 15-3531) for quite some time. I ran it last week and it worked perfectly just like when I used it last, except for Windows Update, which keeps prompting me to upgrade to version 22H2.

I tried to update it through Windows Update several times, and each time I do, it finishes everything normally, but when Windows restarts, an error message pops up saying "we couldn't finish installing....". I finally gave up and used the built-in Windows tool to reset my laptop to factory settings. It finished successfully. Again, the laptop works 100%, EXCEPT for Windows Update. It failed exactly the same way as it did before I reset the laptop.

I even ran diagnostics and driver update on Dell website. All hardware works fine and all drivers were already updated. I followed A LOT of support pages, on MS site and others. Nothing worked! Last 3 attempts gave this error in Update history:

"Last failed install attempt on 14/09/2023 - 0x80242016"

PLEASE HELP ME RESOLVE THIS

PS: I have no idea how to attach an image. I would have liked to share the entire update history.

Please use the ISO to upgrade to 22H2. See the following thread for more information. https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-update/win10-ver-22h2-successfully-installed-13122022/119bf160-d551-4814-8d39-0b68f51de747?messageId=e945b7cb-efe3-472a-b83a-ae5ac545c1c1

If that doesn't help, please zip and share the following setup logs on OneDrive and post the link here.

    • C:$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther\setupact.log
    • C:$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Rollback\setupact.log (if exists)

Okay, let's know how it goes. I'd prefer downloading the ISO because it can be used for subsequent installations and for future DISM repairs, if any.

The "C:$WINDOWS.~BT" folder (hidden) is created whenever Windows Setup is run.

    Image.

If it's missing from your system, it's fine. Please proceed to the next step.

Importantly, ensure you click  “Change how Setup downloads updates“ and choose “Not at the moment” in the initial setup screen.

I did, thank you. In the Media Creation tool, I chose to upgrade this laptop instead of creating a media - USB, ISO, etc. If that didn't work, I'll try the other option. However, once it starts installation and I get prompted, I'll make sure to click “Change how Setup downloads updates”, and select “Not at the moment”** as per your instruction in the other thread.

Thanks a lot for your quick response. While the tool is working, I'd like to ask about the first step you listed in the thread you forwarded me, namely: Please delete the following folder: C:$WINDOWS.~BT".

I don't have such folder, even that I a showing hidden files/folders in view options. Would that affect the operation?
