How do I search files in Windows 10 with a specific date range

Anonymous

Since MS decides to just LOCK the original question/complaint, without ACTUALLY REPAIRING THE STUFF THEY BROKE...

When will this be fixed back to the reasonable way, which does require memorizing stupid text commands and a PhD to simply find a file of a date (or date range)?

Down arrow doesn't work.

Auto popup of a calendar doesn't appear.

The search tool bar give 8 USELESS choices.

I even tried a test:

Entering a search as datemodified: May 2020 yields NOTHING (even though I can SEE A FILE IN THERE with that date)

Microsoft why not JUST ADMIT YOU BROKE IT, and actually FIX IT???

Ego infested b------- that you are...

"I haven't received your message yet"

1, Because it's SUPER annoying trying to log into this forum.. It's yet ANOTHER DEFECTIVE product by MS that they won't admit is broken ... Other servers let you log in with different account concurrently... When you LURE people to using your online Office products, did it not cross anyone mind that MAYBE some of us have multiple accounts??? With multiple companies, plus personal ones??? Instead I have to log out, clear cache, relog in with MFA, when it's not BROKEN AND causing infinite loops of Redirects...

(You do know, don't you.. That I can have two tabs open with DIFFERENT logon's for two Gmail accounts??? And it doesn't crash or go into infinite loops.)

THAT'S why it takes longer to respond to this than, ANY OTHER system on the planet... but I'm sure no one cares about THAT defect either.

    1. You did NOT answer any questions... "When will this be fixed back to the reasonable way"" "why not JUST ADMIT YOU BROKE IT, and actually FIX IT?"

You can identify questions, because they have a question mark at the end.

Telling me how this broken thing is supposed to work, are not answers. Many of us, if you look at other posts you will see, are annoyed that we have to go out and learn this HORRBILE COUNTERINTUITIVE stuff each time, because WE DON'T USE IT FREQUENTLY.

It used to work great, and was intuitive. Then, as typical MS products, it was removed, and replaced with INFERIOR tools.

I am also trying to search for a file that I believe I downloaded a few minutes ago. I am not sure which directory or folder it might be located in (yes, I did look in the downloads folder). It's hours and days to try to do the simplest thing in Windows 10.

After many, many hours the BEST answer seems to be that Windows 10 search is badly broken. There are

dozens of videos about trying to fix this issue. In my case I can not ever find the "search" tab. Of course, since there is no indication of how to get to the screen shown, I may just be unable to find it. All good solutions start with Step 1 - which is the computer just started up. Here is what button to hit next.

No matter what I type into the "Type here to search" box a the bottom of the screen, I end up with a search

result in a browser (Edge, which hijacked its way onto my computer). I also tried putting

" datemodified:>=10/23/2023 <=10/23/2023 " in the "Type here to search" box, but it once again

    forces me into edge.

I can bring up folders on my computer, but I can't make them look like

the screen you show. There is no "Search Tools" menu for my folders.

Any idea how I get to the screen you have shown in your solution?

    Many Thanks

After 6 hours of trying I finally stumbled upon an answer. In short, there will NOT be a "search" tab

until after you have entered a search string INSIDE File Explorer (top right) and hit enter. The steps that I need

to take on my computer are (0) Open a File Explorer window by clicking on the folder at the bottom of

the screen. (1) Type as search string such as datemodified: today into the search box INSIDE File Explorer,

to the top right. These strings must be entered INSIDE file explorer, not in the "Type here to Search" box at the bottom of the screen. (Would be good to update the original soln to note this.) (3) Hit Enter, (4) Observe that the 'search' tab now shows up. You may now use it to select the files types you need, instead of typing in further search strings. I have NOT seen this documented elsewhere.

    Hello Scotty,

Good to see you in Microsoft Community.

Usually you can filter the content in the search results by modification date as shown below.

    _

Or you can refer the tips below:

To search for files within a specific date range in Windows 10, you can use the following search syntax in the search bar: "datemodified:>=mm/dd/yyyy <=mm/dd/yyyy".

Replace "mm/dd/yyyy" with the start and end dates of the range you want to search. For example, to search for files modified between May 1, 2020 and May 31, 2020, you would enter "datemodified:>=05/01/2020 <=05/31/2020" in the search bar.

If anything is unclear, please do not hesitate to let me know.

You can enable classic search in Windows 10 (see options below) which will bring back the pop-up calendar for selecting date ranges.

    Option 1:

Use Winaero Tweaker. The setting is in the File Explorer section.

    Option 2:

If you're also interested in setting your preferred default folder views, use my WinSetView app and select it in the Options page.

    Option 3:

Close all Explorer windows, copy the following command, open a Cmd prompt, right-click to paste it, and then press Enter to execute it:

    reg add "HKCU\Software\Classes\CLSID\{1d64637d-31e9-4b06-9124-e83fb178ac6e}\TreatAs" /f /ve /t REG_SZ /d "{64bc32b5-4eec-4de7-972d-bd8bd0324537}"

Use this command to revert the change:

    reg delete "HKCU\Software\Classes\CLSID\{1d64637d-31e9-4b06-9124-e83fb178ac6e}" /f
