Win 11/64 cannot access USB DVD drive

I have a Asus external dvd drive that I cannot access from windows 11:

  • No drive letter is assigned
  • Device manager shows the DVD, and the "General" properties states the status is "This Device is working Properly"
  • Driver version is 10.0.22621.1, dated 2006-06-21
  • Tried adding the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi" subkey. The computer would not boot while the DVD player was attached.

Odd, I read all about outdated drivers, however the only driver I've found was from 2006.

I have an MSI PRO660BM-A motherboard with the latest BIOS.

Any Thoughts would be appreciated

    I have exactly the same proble trying to access to an old LG DVD CD-ROM.

    The Driver details shown on the device manager are exactly the same too, and Win11 says that they are up to date.

    But File Manager doesn't show the drive.

    I note that the original solution response related to Hard Drives not being identified, not a DVD CD-ROM.

    Is there a different solution for this???

    Its been a while, I left a note on the CD drive .... "don't use 6 foot extension cable".

    So I suggest you look at your cables and how long they are.

    After attaching the external DVD , set the primary boot device in BIOS .

    It was the extension cable that was bad.

    Hello John. I'm Greg, here to help you with this.

    1. Disable any 3rd party antivirus, or uninstall and turn on built-in Defender, to see if that resolves it.
    2. Right click Start button to open Disk Management, scroll down to try to find the drive on the map by size and label, right click on it to assign a drive letter so it's detected in File Explorer.
    3. Go into Device Manager to look for the drive under Disk Drives. It may be listed by it's model or Serial which you can google to determine which is it. Click on the Device, then Driver tab, choose Roll Back if available. If not then choose Uninstall, restart PC to reinstall driver. If that fails choose Update Driver, first Automatically, then if that fails choose Browse > Let Me Pick to try all previous drivers.

    If no newer or this doesn't help, then go to the USB category in Device Manager, open each Enhanced, Hub and Host controller, from Driver tab select Roll back if available, or if not choose Uninstall.

    If your keyboard and mouse are USB, first program the power button to effect the needed restart after Rolling back or uninstalling the driver. Go to Settings > System > Power & Sleep > Additional Power Settings > Choose what Power buttons do to choose Shutdown.

    1. Check if the drive is detected in another PC. If so back up the data to a folder on it's desktop. Once you confirm all the data is off the external, wipe it with Diskpart Clean Command:

    Then plug it back into the PC which cannot detect it, reformat in Disk Management:
