I have a legit copy of both windows 11 home and of Microsoft Office XP 2002.

They have worked, harmoniously together until September. After which Excel and Word simply stopped working (would crash shortly after opening). Another program I have (Markbook by Asylum software) also stopped working in early September.

I work colleague suggested they were linked through some SQL or NET feature update.

I've tried uninstalling BOTH Markbook AND Office XP, updating my Windows Updates, reinstalling them... Same problem and the Windows Microsoft XP Update 3 still gets to 10% and fails.

Is there a patch I am missing?

Ah, but it does NOT run anymore... it did this time 4 weeks ago. I didn't change anything... along came a mystery update and POOF, not working any more.

So, I am here, hat in hand, seeking a solution.

If you could tell me what update screwed things up, I would delete it.

If you can tell me why the XP Service Pack 3 update won't work (but having it work would solve my problems) then that would rock.

So, there were NO Compatibility issues until early September - then Excel STOPPED working, along with Word. I did not change anything at my end.

The only change would be an update from microsoft.

So please, I use Excel and Word a LOT, I really do not want to convert everything to Google Sheets and Google Docs and learn that. I like Excel and Word and I am used to them.

The sad part, I have a backup computer that I could use - but something went wrong with it and it died. My buddy replaced the part that failed, but said I needed to have some memory stick for windows or buy a new computer (heaven knows where such a thing would be), so now my backup computer has Linux instead (barf).

It was working at the start of September on my Windows 11 Home.

So, something happened between now and then.

Since I ~own~ a copy of Office (albeit old), I am not sure why it is incumbent on my to purchase the software again (windows could make things out of date to force people to rebuy things, which isn't cool, right).

I want to know what CHANGE/UPDATE happened in early September. If it was a specific update, I will DELETE the update and soldier on.

    Thanks in advance, Igor.

Sorry, I'm too old to spend my time to investigate unusual problems. XP3 just is not compatible with the newest Windows 11 build. Did you try to run it in compatibility mode?

No one can force you to buy a new Office, you may run your Office XP still. But there may be some compatibility issues. Use older Windows version and there will be no problem.

Unfortunately, Microsoft does not give a very detailed description of the changes.

One may use old Office with new Windows, but often this means Office was installed on previous builds. And it cannot be installed on newer builds.

    Hi Steven,

My name is Igor, it's a pleasure for me to help others and I'll do all my best to help you.

I'm sorry for the bad news but Older versions of Office such as Office 2003 and Office XP are not certified compatible with Windows 10 but might work using compatibility mode.

    Please see https://social.technet.microsoft.com/forums/en-...

So you may try to run setup in Windows 7 compatibility mode but in general Office XP is too old to be successfully installed in Windows 11.
