    Hello malcolm francis367,

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

I looked up all the formats supported by the media player, but there doesn't seem to be a DVD playback format:

File types supported by Windows Media Player

Therefore, I recommend that you can play DVD discs through external dvd player devices or third-party player software.

    1. External DVD player

If your laptop's built-in optical drive does not fully recognize DVD discs, you may need to purchase a DVD reader device to play DVD discs.

Connect the external DVD player to the laptop via USB, and then put the DVD disc into the optical drive to play the DVD disc.

    2. Third-party playback software

If your laptop has a built-in optical drive but does not have its own player software, you can download third-party player software to play DVDS. Before downloading, make sure that the software you are using supports reading DVDS.

After downloading and installing, put the DVD into the drive, and then open the player software, select "Open disc" or "Open file".

    Best regards,
