Microsoft Remote desktop primary process name in windows

Hi there,

We have noticed that the primary application executable (process) is different in case of different versions of Microsoft Remote Desktop. These are the two scenarios we observed:

  • Version:1.2.3577.0, Process: msrdcw.exe
  • Version:10.2.3005.0, Process: RdClient.Windows.exe

So, wanted to know the following:

  1. Why is there a difference in the executables for different versions. Normally, the executables remain the same with the version upgrade of the application ?
  2. Which of the following is the preferred and most common executable that is shipped with the application ?
  3. Do we have any other executable that is shipped with other versions of this application ? If yes, can I get to know about the full list.

Thanks.

In case anyone else finds this thread and has the same question:

I can confirm that the msrdc and msrdcw executables are for the installed program that resides in C:\Program Files\Remote Desktop

The RdClient.Windows.exe executable I believe is linked to the Microsoft store app which is fundamentally a different program packaged differently and therefore has a different version number.

Last time I tested, the store app was lacking in a number of key respects including the ability to sign in to multiple accounts, and some multi-monitor support as well I believe. This may have been fixed by now, I've just defaulted to the downloaded and installed program ever since.

The difference in the executables for different versions of Microsoft Remote Desktop could be due to several reasons, such as changes in functionality, improvements in performance, or updates to the underlying technology. It is not uncommon for application
